Handelman coming back to the Triangle/Triad

WZTK 101.1 is running ads that Alan Handelman's show will start up on their airwaves 10pm Sunday, right after AllSoftJazzWeekend ends. Ought to be some segue.

Welcome back, Alan!

Glad to see someone has the cajones to pick up the show after WRDU/CC got scared of it. Since WZTK doesn't really get into eastern NC we will still depend on the online feed, but that's better than nothing.

Wonder if Handelman could cut a deal with XM or Sirius?

It's a familiar scenario: one stations wimps out, another one jumps up to take up the slack. 'Twas ever thus...

I think it has more to do with ratings....or lack thereof than cajones.

Of course it's about the ratings. Handelman had a substantial audience on WRDU but Clear Channel's management got scared when he started talking about internet radio and podcasting on his show. The impression I got, from several different sources, was that CC preferred their audience to remain ignorant about these things. They used the ratings excuse as a smokescreen, but anyone with any intelligence could see right through it. A substantial number of callers to his show were from WRDU's coverage area, so obviously SOMEONE was listening.

Perhaps it meant a lot to us here in eastern NC because we've always thought of Handelman as our local boy who made good.* He started his talk show on the former WRQR in Farmville NC. For years, his Sunday night show was a must-listen for my friends and I within the limited reach of the 94.3 signal. (Anyone remember when he did a remote from the Devil's Tramping Ground?) When he moved to WQDR in Raleigh, WOOW 1340 in Greenville, in its dying days as a music station, simulcasted his show for his former listeners here (including a lot of folks at ECU, an audience a lot of stations are busting ass to reach and utterly failing).

His show always had a substantial following in this neck of the woods, and the way WRDU and Clear Channel tried to convince us it didn't have listeners was insulting. That is why I removed WRDU from my car radio presets. I also think WSFL 106.5 (Beasley) is missing a golden opportunity by not carrying the show, as they did for a while. Handelman originates his show from WRFX in Charlotte on the same satellite channel as the John Boy & Billy Big Show, which WSFL carries.

It's true that a talk show is a break in the formatics for a music station, but it seems most stations would prefer sounding the same 24/7. This creates a sort of drone effect for listeners who actually pay attention to what's coming out of the speakers. Handelman's show stood out like a beacon from the general drone. That would seem to be a GOOD thing, but I'm just a listener so what do I know?

* Yes, I know he's originally from Patchogue NY, but ENC is where he first made his mark.

I just have to admire Allan Handelman for "keeping it real" and doing what he wants to do and carrying it off for 25 years now.

As for ratings, I just don't see "more classic hits on Sunday nights" as much of "appointment radio" as Allan Handelman's show. "More classic rock" isn't a reason to listen at that time than any other time. And being afraid of discussing satellite radio and other changes is running scared.

Maybe I'm prejudiced because I have had some conversations with Allan waaaaay back in the day (like 1990) after he went to that station in Hickory that's now The Ride for a short time, and he was always real nice to a dorky "fan" calling up to talk out of the blue about radio.

From everything I've heard and seen, WRDU's decision was more about lack of cajones than lack of ratings, because RDU is thinking they have one, while trying to get the other, but missing on all accounts.

Where is Reynolds and Silva when you need them? ;)

I give 'ZTK a lot of credit on this one. That whole format took "cajones" and this is another bold move. Clear Channel has made similar moves in FM talk but they wouldn't even think of it without stealing Limbaugh and Hannity. Just another example of the Curtis people trying something different. I give them credit.

I heard that today. William Kristol is the first guest. I think he's been on the Sunday night show a couple of times....

Whatever their reasoning, it's good to hear someone thinking outside all the radio boxes for once. ;)

Hmmm. Adding a guy that pukes, sounds like he's talking to an audience of 1960's stoners and doesn't appear to have a vast depth of knowledge about any of his topics. That is thinking outside the box! Guess the next step will be to add MSNBC's Rita Crosby as co-host.

What you got against people who puke?
Who on the radio appears to have a vast depth of knowledge about anything?
And why would WZTK add eye candy like that to a radio show? ;)

Actually, believe it or not, Art Bell has a huge knowledge of all the strange stuff he talks about. I'm not a big fan of his show, but if you listen for awhile you start realizing how clever the guy is.

I understand Allan Handleman has a huge history in the market, and that's great, my problem with his show is that his program is just dreadful. It's like you've transported back to the era of mullets and IROC-Z's. Talk radio for the "rock culture?" There hasn't been a "rock culture" since the grunge era, if not longer ago than that. Allan has the experience and I am sure he has the skills to be relevant and entertaining for the year 2005. It just ain't happening right now.

You mean Rita Cosby? I doubt it. She worked at WBTV in Charlotte while all of us radio nerds at WBT drooled on the glass window when she walked by. Her first big story was about her placing two ads in the local Creative Loafing personals, one said she was a church girl, shy, conservative. The other said she was an... adventurous scandinavian blonde. So she got a bazillion replies to the second, three to the first. Some of the schmoes even agreed to let her camera crew tape the date. And of course she was not interested in any second dates. Cruel........

But hey, now she's on MSNBC and even less accessible for my drool. Wife won't let my do that on our TV.

When she's not doing her impersonation of Brett Butler and Stone Phillips simultaneously.

What does "pukes" mean in the context you're using it? I'm assuming this is some lingo that I don't know.

For what it's worth, I'm 26 and in graduate school, and this guy actually connects with me and a lot of my friends - he's certainly different from the other hosts they have on WZTK, but I actually like his style. Having lived in N.C. most of my life, I listened to his Sunday show regularly, and I'll admit it seems a little weird having him on a mostly-conservative talk station - but if he weren't there, myself and (I'd imagine) a lot of other folks like me wouldn't be listening to that channel at all.

The center fielder and the NBC anchor?
Dang, you could've picked a woman to compare her to at least. ;)

We might have to wait until next week before they get "the equipment" set up for the Sunday night show, but hopefully it'll be this weekend, "critics notwithstanding." ;)
