Interesting question. I'll take Hank's version. There was a post awhile back that centered around Pat Boone. That poster insisted that Oldies stations ALWAYS play the original versions, regardless of how they charted. Here's a few more:
Little Darlin' Gladiolas OR Diamonds
His Laterst Flame Del Shannon OR Elvis
I Can Hear Music Ronettes OR Beach Boys
Hanky Panky Raindrops OR Tommy James
This Magic Moment Drifters OR Jay & the Americans
It is show #1395 and will be available for about another week. He plays the hits and very obscure twist songs including Everybody's Twistin' by Frank Sinatra.
And I prefer Hank Ballard, though Chubby imitated Ballard note by note.
Jerry Blavatt-The Geater with the heater likes to play Chubby at live deejay gigs and then midway switches to Ballard and then with less than a minute left switches back to Chubby. He has perfected it to an art, and you have to listen to know that the record was switched.
The first time that Hank Ballard heard the Chubby version, he was at a pool in Hallendale, FL and heard it on a radio and wondered why a top 40 station was playing his song. Then he heard something different and realized it was someone else trying to sound like him. That is one story that I heard by Lane Quigley.
