Hank Imaging

Okay, here's why Hank will beat WFMS.

Their imaging has swagger. They got their swerve on. Years ago WFMS imaging made it sound like they owned the market, now Hank has that sound.

As a dumb listener this imaging makes it sounds like the war is over. With no connection to the market how long before Cumulus changes format?

While I'd love to see Hank kick the living snot out of WFMS, I think the war is far from over. Based on the ratings of the moment, it seems like more of a skirmish. Hank sounds better than it has in eons, but this will be an Afghanistan length war. Cumulus will not change this format for years, if ever. WFMS is a cash cow. It can bleed for a very long time and still make more money than vast majority of the stations in the market.

Country listeners are more loyal than that. Few, if any WFMS listeners will ever leave and start listening to Hank just because of the imaging. There's only one way that Hank can ever beat WFMS, and I think we all know what that is: Both Jim and JD would have to defect and go to Hank. As long as those two are on WFMS, don't expect any format change or Hank to ever beat WFMS.

And how long before their contracts end?

Hank's imaging sounds great! I respectfully disagree that the "swagger" will bring a ratings boost. WFMS posted their best numbers when they used "Life in the country...simple and real" imaging. Only us radio geeks get off on sweepers with attitude complete with circa-1985 lazer zaps ;D

Obviously it is more than swagger. I have to say that WFMS has lost it and Hank has it. Why aren't you there?

The problem is cumulus dna. Nashville and the large staff including a Dickey being shown the door, at least for a short time. People lost jobs. The Dick ey was hired elsewhere.

When you go from a non typical station with lots of staff, support, and services the analogy is easy. Do you like a sit down meal at Rallys? No, for a sit down you want Texas Roadhouse. When you had WFMS it was a buffet of staff and support, untypical for radio.

Now the Dickeys saw that when they bought it. Cash flow versus expenses. Shirk used to carry 30-35%, Emmis, at least 50%. If WFMS spent 50% of what came in how much dough was that that wasn't kept? And we hear it was more like 60-70%. The Dickeys know that they can operate at 30-40%, loose some ratings, "overpriced" staff like Morgan, Murphy, Lee. etc.etc. etc. and still have a net gain in the millions per month. WFMS is paid for using that scenario.

Why didn't I go into junk bonds? I still ove radio but the business side stinks.
Listeners mean nothing in the business model, only the result of listening. Will PPM change that? We'll see.

Based on what?

BTW, if you'd seen the song title reports from SoundScan, you'd know that WFMS actually plays more unique titles than Hank does.
