Hanky's Predictions for 2006

2005 is almost over! It's been a year of year of ups and downs. First the downs: Wild 94-9 firing its most popular show "The Doghouse Morning Show" in April and the ratings going way south. The Bay Area losing its only country music station, 95-7 The Bear to an Adult Hits format known an 95-7 MAX-FM.
The Oakland A's lost their flagship radio station, KFRC-AM after the 610 frequency was sold to Family Stations, Inc., and it became KEAR. Bill King died after a long illness at the age of 78.
Now the ups: Longtime radio veteran, Star 101-3 Morning Man, Don Bleu getting inducted into the Radio Hall Of Fame and Wild 94-9 hiring former Chabot College radio legend Mary Diaz to replace Dreena Gonzalez, who exited to take an afternoon gig at KS107.5 in Denver! Hoodrat Miguel took the night gig at gig at KYLD replacing Strawbrry who segued into mornings at Wild.

Now Here are my predictions for 2006:

Mainstream Top 40 and Country Formats will return to the Bay Area in early 2006.

The KDON/Monterey Morning Madhouse will be an even better morning show in 2006.

KFRC will change formats back to rock oldies!

KABL will find its way back to terrestial radio!

and me, Hammerin' Hank will hopefully be back on the radio!!!!!

Have a great holiday season!!!!!

mine is 106.9 will change formats due to low ratings and 95.7 will change back to top 40 as "the new z95.7" and chr/r will come back to san jose at 97.7

My prediction is that radio in SF will continue its slow death. Think just a few years back when the Z was at its peak under Mark Adams, Wild and KMEL weren't the same company and Wild was UN-FREAKIN-STOPPABLE! In the last 5 years SF radio has gotten boring...

My thought is... corporate radio needs to stop sucking and inject life back into SF radio. SF used to have some of the best radio in the nation... can't say that anymore. Everyone is content with their position, and no one is REALLY fighting.

It's sad.

um, why would they "bring back" z95.7 if they wanted it to go away sooo quickly???? and I don't think I'd wanna hear feeerrrrnaaaannnnndooo in the morning again, or the woody show, or human numan, they did have some sucky morning shows, and katie mason sucked too, even when she did country, now, lara scott and diana steele where both easy on the eyes and great to listen to.:)

ok, I admit, I do miss HOT DAY SOUTHBAY at great america, HOT 977 was a cool ass radio station, even though it didn't hit the east bay too well.

Your right, it is sad. Instead of giving us what we want, their telling us what we want. The same is in music, sports and just about everything else. It's almost like we're living in a fake world due to saturation of corporations.

Heres a suggestion, help out your local nonprofit/college/community radio stations. Although, I do love having XM on DirectTV. Sorry.

Well said.

Unfortunately, your post won't stop the clueless who post their own "predictions" based on their own often-emotional points of view, with no rational explanation of why they are making the prediction.

Get a clue, people: "Predicting" that 106.9 will change formats just because YOU don't like it does not mean Infinity will drop a format quickly after launching it. That's not the way the industry works, and the sooner you understand that, the sooner we will be freed from having to wade through a lot of clueless posts.
______________

First, Bill King didn't die after a "long illness." He died from a pulmonary embolism after hip surgery.

Second, *which* Radio Hall of Fame was Don Bleu inducted into?

Third, and with all due respect to Mary Diaz (who I've never heard), how do you qualify as a "legend" at a junior college radio station?

I SECOND THIS! Hot 97.7 had an amazing street presence. Growing up in San Jose, it was a sad day when it flipped.

Clear Channel is good at burying things. No pun intended...
______________

Actually, only Jim Lange retired, and he's still available for voiceovers and commercial work. Clark Reid is still working with Clear Channel in San Francisco, and Carter B. Smith is seeking employment, as is Jim Lange's sidekick, Dino Donikian.

Aside from them, I can't think of any of the KABL jocks that have actually moved or retired.

I understand that Clear Channel is still working on its plans for multi-channel HD Radio, which could include a return of KABL on the air, everywhere, on your San Francisco radio dial.

Mike Clary is doing mornings on KIDD in Monteray 630 AM. The station will stream soon, according to Ben Fong Torres. The rest of the schedule is Music of Your Life.

I too have heard about these plans for a multicast on KISS if I remember correctly. To bad IBOC doesn't have nearly the footprint the analog carrier has…
______________

If you're talking about Mike Cleary, he hasn't been with KABL for several years. I had thought that we were referring to the station's staff during its most recent iteration.
______________
