Hap Harper

Carter B. Smith just sent along word that Hap Harper, who claimed to be the world's first airborne radio traffic reporter, has died. He was Don Sherwood's sidekick and partner-in-crime on KSFO, and later worked with Frank Dill on KNBR and Gene Nelson on KSFO/KYA-FM.

I'm so sorry to hear this Hap Harper was a fine gentleman! I always enjoyed it when he was on with Gene Nelson on KSFO after Gene Autry sold the station to King Broadcasting. Thanks for passing this along! He is
truely soaring with the angels now!

Sad to read about Hap. He was quite a character and was still very busy til the end...Saw him from time to time in the Clear Channel building on Townsend.

Actually flew with him once. He scared the crap out of me! Not because he was a bad pilot, but he let my father fly the plane for awhile....:)

Steve Rubenstein wrote a nicely detailed obituary for Hap in this morning's Chronicle: http://tinyurl.com/ezh95

Death notice and condolence messages at http://tinyurl.com/edvra

The chapter on Sherwood & Harper's famous "Raid On Stockton" may be read on the Bay Area Radio Museum website: http://tinyurl.com/gt468

I should also note that Hap also did traffic on KFRC in the mid-1960s before the station switched to Top 40.

Hap Harper was a great guy, and I had the chance to fly in the Piper Lance with him in the 70's (?) He will be missed. Thanks to Carter B. Smith, and BossradioDJ for the "heads up".

A broadcast legend for sure! I listened to KSFO from 1954 to 1974. A class act.
