Happenings in the tri-parish area

Well everyone who reads the board knows about KLRZ being sold to Citadel as of late but here are a few newsworthy items not found:

Earlier this past week, Michael Starr sumitted paperwork to the FCC showing John Treen selling his interest in Delta Starr (98% owner of KTIB) to Starr. If approved, The sale would give Starr the 66% ownership needed to possibly sell the station... If it would still be Cajun Radio or a dark horse seems to be the question of the day.

Found on the web, The Eastlan Radio ratings company will now survey tri-parish radio. Owen Webre, president of Guaranty Broadcasting (which owns 4 stations in the tri-parish area) is one of the forces behind getting Eastlan to come to our market. The market if rated by Arbitron would place at 170, above Lake Charles,Monroe, and Alexandria.

What's up at KDDK? KDDK and sister station KFRA was posted for sale on the internet website Broadcaststations4sale.com until recently together for $800k+ ..Now just Amer KFRA 1390 is up for sale at $195k for the 500watt daytime/244 watt nightime station. Currently it's formatting with a relay of the KDDK's nostalgia format. Nothing can be found on KDDK on if it's being sold or a change of heart by the current owners. (These two stations also had a recent violations notice (January 2005) from the FCC due to ownership and tower violations

As was reported recently in the Bayou Business review; Hubcast broadcasting, owner of KBZE-Fm is looking to put a sales office in Houma on Tunnel Blvd. with possibly a satellite broadcast studio. It is reaffirmed that Hubcast is not leaving the Morgan City area, Just wishing to expand into the Terrebonne Parish market http://www.houmatoday.com/apps/pbcs.../BUSINESS03/506080308&SearchID=73211669660938
(However KBZE's signal is a rimshot at their new sales location)

Anymore to add anyone?

The KTIB deal has always been about money. Starr had bought out Treen
before selling the station to Cajun. The problem with the deal was
that Treen did not know about the Cajun deal and could have made more
by not selling to Starr. It wasn't a huge amount of money but all the
lawsuits started because of it. Starr has insisted and prevailed in court
that he did nothing wrong.

All these guys are tied together on verious stations so maybe they have
decided to play nice together and drop some of the lawsuits. Bruno may
still be the odd man out on KTIB.

Eastlan has Houma and Monroe locked up as new markets. They will be in
Lafayette next week to try to pick that market up as well. Arbitron has
not paid much attention to Lafayette in the last year and Eastlan may be
able to do a better job.

KDDK has had an offer for just the FM for a while now. At this point
it has not been accepted. There may be some other deals brewing for it.
The station can't be moved because of 105.5 at Eunice, 105.9 in Berwick
and Opelousas and a few others that block it. The FCC fine was a result
of a deal with the FCC and the owner in order to avoid a much larger
fine. The FCC found a huge number of violations including the illegal
LMA with KJCB.

KBZE is in the same boat as KDDK only they are a lot closer to a larger
market (Houma) than KDDK is. Looks like they are going to try to pick up
a few dollars out of the Houma market.

I'm sorry to say it , But all I know is this story smells all the way around.. I know the diference was only what about $30k or so ...I just wanted to report on Starr playing by the rules and finally showing the ownership change... I would however like to see what Bruno does to this application however.

Also Do you think Cajun Radio afterwards will retry for KTIB, or could a dark horse like Jerry Gisclair flush with cash come in and buy KTIB? (as the other two stations he owns are on AM)and has hinted publicly that he may have another station in mind...

As I think you said, before no one wanted to buy this market with arbitron even though the tri-parish is larger than 3 metro areas in Louisiana. Arbitron I agree should have gone to continous with Lafayette with the market so high in ratings but most of the lack of info is the restriction Arbitron put on the market cause a non subscriber was using the numbers...

I've never heard of Eastlan before this however... How do they sample? By book like Arbitron?

Also with Guaranty backing the Eastlan people to publish the info on the tri-parish, This hopefully marks that Guaranty isn't planning on leaving Houma just yet (as they have left every other market except Houma and Baton Rouge)...

However from what I can tell Eastlan doesn't publish their 12+ numbers like Arbitron... I'd like to see what was number 1

The AM station is one of those that's gonna be a hard sell espcially if it's by itself. I don't know how much the other stations around it went for (that are of almost same power) but they are either releigious or swamp pop and will be intersting to see what happens...

The FM, even though it's blocked in, can be used as a community radio station and has more potential than the AM station. Makeing it a starter station if you will or a simucast of another (such as KBZE)

They have been doing that for a few years (KBZE) They put a sales office in Thibodaux and are broadcasting Nicholls athletics. The only reason I made my comment is, It's hard to sell what you can't hear.... Between the proposed c2 for 105.7 in Golden Meadow (It's an allocation not up for auction yet), 105.9 in Gulfport and Opelousas, and 106.1 on the northshore.. it can't move or increase power... and after a while, hubcast will try to bite more than it can chew IMO, and I think trying to sell in Houma with a tropo opening (when one or more stations are covering up KBZE) may be one of them.
