10 years ago this week I got in the car and not long after I started out I heard Michael Bolton's "Time, Love and Tenderness". Worse than that, it sounded like a dance remix with these incredibly annoying sound effects. Something was wrong. I did hear Tony Bennett. But over the next several weeks I heard a bunch of songs that didn't fit. Never mind that they went back to the Stardust satellite format at night, or that it was even more traditional that time of day than during daylight hours.
I once heard the DJ say he played The Thompson Twins, though I didn't hear what song. One day I heard "FM" by Steely Dan and figured that the classic rock station on the same frequency was messing up my signal. Nope. That station was playing something different. During a station ID with a sample of music from each decade, the 80s were represented by "Just Like Jesse James" by Cher. One of the last songs I heard before they gave up this mess was "Missing You" by John Waite. Also, "One More Try" by George Michael and "Nightshift" by The Commodores. Sadly, standards radio seems to be moving in this direction 10 years later.
But getting back to what happened then: I sent my very first email, with "vchimpanzee" on the subject line. It was a typo and I didn't know at the time how to fix it. But that would make a great name when I had my own email address. Anyway, I congratulated the music director and suggested he appear on Leno or Letterman.
There were 1000 complaints and the chimp was soon gone. He came back during 2000 and 2001, during the day, and eventually showed up on Unforgettable Favorites. That's the theory.
