Happy 30th anniversary (two days early)----

Saturday will mark the 30th anniversary of the sign on of Birmingham's WTTO-21. They signed on at 6:00 p.m. on April 21st, 1982 with a rerun of "Buck Rogers in the 21st Century".

Clever! I always wondered why Buck Rogers was the first show they aired. And we can't forget the calls, "Television Twenty One".

I was too young to witness that, but I did catch WCAJ 68's sign on a few years later. Reception was pretty good down in Tuscaloosa at the time, surprisingly so for such a high UHF signal with lower power and a short tower.

It is SO frightening A) that I remember the day WTTO signed on and B) that I've been out of school In Tuscaloosa almost 30 years now.

In a broadcast management class I took about a year after they were on air - their operations manager I believe spoke to our class and I asked if they had considered going for the CBS affiliation from then very weak WBMG 42. They said "Nahh, because of 33 (WCFT Tuscaloosa) and 40 (WHMA Anniston). In five years we might consider going after some network affiliation. Of course, they were one of the inaugural Fox affiliates for a while - FOX 21.

I left a year before Tuscaloosa original WDBB 17 signed on the air. On at least two occasions, somehow my little portable Sony was able to pick up channel 17 from Nashvillle before that. Not a clear picture by any means, but enough to read the visual top of the hour ID.

Was that before or after they went to the tall tower? I understand WDBB had quite the killer coverage area when they were up there the first time. I remember getting them crystal clear atop Mt. Cheaha, but then I got everything from Montgomery to Chattanooga and Tuscaloosa to Atlanta crystal clear up there!

Now 17 is just a glorified relay of WTTO, but back on the tall tower again, I believe.

And what a lot of people have forgotten is that WDBB-17 and its repeater WNAL-44 from Gadsden were the original Fox affiliates for Birmingham.

It always amazed me that from the get-go, Channel 21 had stronger ratings than Channel 42. Of course, Channel 42 then wasn't what Channel 42 is now.
