Happy 50th Anniversary DRC-FM

Jerry Kristafer just mentioned on his show about a half hour ago that today is the actual 50th anniversary of DRC-FM. A special edition of "The Saturday Night Special" will feature more about the anniversary this Saturday 5:30PM-7PM.

The original WDRC-FM signed on in 1939 as W1XPW at 43.4 MHZ. Later it moved to 46.5 MC and became W65H before becoming WDRC-FM in 1943. By 1947 WDRC-FM had shifted to 93.7 MC. In 1955 WDRC-FM became WFMQ and eventually sold to T. Micahel Hastings and moved the station to 105.9 which became WHCN - Hartford's Concert Network.

WDRC AM and it's FM Construction permit for 102.9 were sold to Buckley Broadcasting and test programs for 102.9 FM began in late 1959.

The above is paraphrased from http://www.wdrcobg.com/

So they're basically counting from when it became WDRC-FM at 102.9 FM then? Interesting...WTIC-FM 96.5 seemed to have similar moves before they became a beautiful music station, long before the switch to contemporary music in 1977.

I believe they count their birthdays from the day in 1960 when WDRC (AM) went full-time top 40. Since DRC-FM is an oldies/classic hits station, the lineage from the old top-40 AM has been melded into the FM's. So it's actually the 50th birthday of WDRC playing teen-oriented pop music.

It's been a real trip to listen to them over the past year as they dropped in old jingles and aircheck clips between songs. Hope they keep it up into the future.
