Happy Anniversary, WMRD

In his "15 years ago today" section this week, Scott Fybush remembers how 1150 WCNX changed their call letters to the current WMRD. He notes that the station originally had wanted the call letters of WCTX, which, incidentally, ended up on a television station many years later.

What does the "MRD" stand for, anyway? Whenever I see those call letters, I always think the station should be in Meriden.

When Don Decesare bought the station he had a few call letter ideas in mind. All his ideas were already in use and not available. As a goof he suggested WMRD, to stand for Mr. D(ecesare). Guess what happened? :)
