HAPPY BIRTHDAY, POWER 106!!!!

26 years old.

KPWR signs on as Power 106 on Friday night, January 11, 1986 at 6:00pm with "Say I'm Your Number One" by Princess. Only six months after signing on, Power 106 becomes the top-rated station in Los Angeles.

Don't forget J-J-J-Ja-Jay Thomas and his "Bigmouth Power!"

If I remember correctly---which is something I can't offer a money-back guarantee on---of the top 30 songs on the first playlist of Power 106, there were only five songs that weren't also being played on KIIS. On March 28, 1991, KDAY ended its rap/hip-hop format and the next day became business-news KBLA. (I taped the final 45 minutes---J.J. Johnson was the DJ---and gave a copy to George Junak, who runs California Airchecks. He proceeded to make money from it---but that's okay.) After KDAY went off the air, Power 106 started adding more and more rap/hip-hop. The station was never as enjoyable to me after that.

How could we possibly forget J-J-J-Jay (Bigmouth) Thomas???

What's really cool is I'm in the midst of digitizing all my Power 106 airchecks...no more cheap cassettes that will either break or twist up. An all CD & Mp3 collection!

What's on the tape from 1992? Saturday Night Dance party with George McFly or Downtown Julie Brown, right? Or Fast Bobby with the tape beginning with Baby Got Back?

I know this cause it's prob the same, played out tape from '92 that's been circulating for years.

Actually, this makes 27. :)

Backstory. Starting just after New Years 1986, the production assistant at Emmis flagship WENS / Indianapolis was spending her time ripping rhythmic hits to tape cartridge in our music library in Indianapolis. Quickly talk began to spread through the radio station. Was WENS changing format? Finally about a week before the L.A. rollout, Emmis corporate programmer Rick Cummings had to admit it was for the Emmis L.A. property. I helped pack the original Power music library on cart into a couple of cardboard shipping boxes, labeling them for UPS to deliver overnight to L.A. Most of us in Indy watched those early days of the Power roll out as closely as the listeners in the Southland.

A large part of our interest in Power was the move of our Indy Production Director, Eric Edwards, to Power 106. For someone from the middle of Indiana, Eric Edwards was able to capture the vibe needed to move Power to the top of the L.A. ratings. Absolutely no discussion of the roll out of Power is complete without one big massive hats-off to "Double E." Combined with the voice of the late Chuck Riley, the imaging power Eric Edwards provided Power 106 was the foundation and framework that held that radio station together.

May the words, "72,000 watts of music power..." live forever in the great history of L.A. radio.

Whatever happened to Fast Bobby Torres? In 92 I was in 8th and I used to tape the station all the time. I remember waking up at 5am to get ready to go to school and he was on the over night shift. He used to be one of my favorite Power 106 jocks at the time.

Would I be able to get the ones above? I have many from 86-92 that I just digitized and can get you links for when I get back in town.

Do you still have those tapes of Fast Bobby? Wanna do a trade? As mentioned in the earlier post, I just digitized a bunch of my Power 106 onto CD/mp3 files.

Here you go. Sorry for the quality because I digitized them with a cheap USB tape recorder. I'll use my mixing board for the next tapes so they'll sound a lot cleaner.

Thanks! Some Fast Bobby, Laurie Allen etc would be great if you can post those, too. I have a Power Workout aircheck that I'm sure you would like and a few others. Can send them via YouSendIt if you shoot me an email address.
