Happy Birthday To Oldies 106.7

On July 4, 1989, the first FM Oldies station ever in New Orleans signed on - KQLD, Oldies 106.7. The first song they played was "Blueberry Hill." Oldies had finally moved to the big time, out of the confines of AM on WYAT.

The starting lineup was:
Skinny Tommy Cheney - AM Drive
Shawn Michaels - Midday
Bob Walker & Sgt. T-Ben Boudreaux - PM Drive
Quita Allen - Evenings
Doc Watson - Overnights

GM was Harry Williams
Sales Manager was Lynn Long

The station took off like a skyrocket. Three weeks later (count 'em), the morons at Beasley let it be known that the station was up for sale, to help with the debt service on K-Earth in L.A.

In spite of the cloud hanging over it all, KQLD was consistantly top-3 and tied once for #1 with WNOE-FM during its stay. Three or four remotes every weekend as the owners tried to dump the station but couldn't for over three years.

But the inevitable corporate cuts came, equipment fell apart, eviction from Poydras Street and a hasty weekend move to the Plaza Towers materialized, faces changed and the spirit inside finally faded away.

KQLD, Oldies 106.7, Port Sulphur-New Orleans died on July 4, 1993.

Happy Birthday, old friend. It was fun.

It was a good little station you guys had back then. I remember when my mom would listen, I hated it so much cause it was "old music." Of course, I wanted to hear newer stuff that I liked and that was only on B-97FM. :) I realize so much nowdays that KQLD-FM Port Sulphur/New Orleans was such a treasure to have in this city that had no classics on FM at that time. I surely do miss it!!!

Anyways Bob,... I had mentioned back at the last reunion that I had a short, but decent quality aircheck of Oldies 106.7. It was recorded on a Saturday. I asked if anyone of y'all could identify part-timers that worked there at the time, but not many could remember. Well, I managed to get a chance to listen to it again, and I heard the guy. His name is Glenn Gomez. He mentions his name in a top hour ramp jingle into The Supremes - Baby Love. I don't know if he was really new at the time, but maybe you or someone can remember.

BTW... Does ANYONE have a logo of that station they could post or make available to me. I'm a collector of all things radio. I would love to add that to my collection. And it doesn't have to be great quality, just something to look at and remember. Thx!

Bob,
I still have some of those square cut-outs that Oldies 106.7 passed around when the Saints started their undefeated streak in 1991, it's ashame that the format only lasted four years. Seems like a lot longer. Another example of how good times go by fast.

Jeremy, come on, give us a little credit, we were "Classic" on 92.3 WCKW at that time, too...Cap, Pal, Reno, Tommy B, me...I did love Oldies 96.7, too!

Sorry Wayne ;), you guys were indeed "classic" over at 'CKW! I have to reconsider what counts as classic these days! ;D
