Happy "Birthday" WARL

I used to listen to them all the time growing up when they were WARA. A couple of different hosts even invited me down to be a part of their show. I haven't listened to in a long time, but I have good memories of the station. Happy Birthday to them.

The only worthwhile (by that I mean good) memories I have of 1320 were in the years just before and just after the power upgrade from 1000 watts to 5000 watts. This was in the time period of the mid and late 1980's.

In those times, WARA was under the ownership of Peter Ottmar, and Dave Kane was serving as both Program Director and morning talk host.

Of course, this was back when WARA was truly dedicated to serving its local listening area. Nowadays....I believe the term would be "super-serving". As I remember, Kane always had the station involved in some sort of crusade or charity....too numerous to remember here...just one example being the annual "Christmas is for Kids".

In retrospect....the power upgrade might have been the worst thing to hapen to 1320....as after the Ottmar/Kane days....the station started to drift and lose focus.....until it became the steaming pile of irrelevence it is today.

Now that 1320 is 62...does this mean WARL can join sister station 990 and just RETIRE ?!? :D

Such a shame they stopped being an Attleboro station and became a Providence rimshot. I can remember them being the PawSox flagship for awhile. Night games were tough as WATR Waterbury CT
would begin to fade in.

man I remember working for them almost 10 years ago when it was the conspiracy radio format as a board op...boy there were some characters at that place, such a waste of a signal.

If WARL can grab 1220 AM in Providence, the 2 stations would be the undisputed kings of local brokered radio! A virtual gold mine!

If you refer back to reply number 2, 1320 already has a sister station in Providence in the form of the silent 990-WALE. It's highly unlikely that the evangelical Christian church in Massachusetts which owns 1220 would ever sell.

Even though I might enjoy slinging the occasional arrow 1320's way.....it should be noted that 1320 is part of an ever-shrinking handful of AM's in this market whose format is primarily ENGLISH and SECULAR (along with 630, 790, and 920).

When I was quite young, I remember WARA circa 1965. I had relatives down there and was amazed that this station existed, since I never got it in metro Boston (WCRB on 1330 made sure of that).

The little station was a charming, home town service back then. The positioner went something like: "This is WARA serving Attleboro, North Attleboro and Mansfield Massachusetts". Lots and lots of little store advertizers. Many ads were live copy read by an announcer. In the early evening they played a bit of symphonic music, then---around 9:30 PM --- had a quick prayer and signed off!

Those were the days.

Sounds better than the national ads all over the place now (Safelite which is on in seemingly EVERY stopset), Progressive, etc..

Apparently....that has changed somewhat.

A look at the latest FCC online ownership records for 1320-WARL indicates that Peter Arpin has reduced his holdings in 990-WALE from 79 percent....down to a mere 25 percent.

otherr than Salty, on WPRO, the definitive "no school" voice was Frank Titus on WARA

Thanks for jogging my memory! I remember Frank Titus. He was still part of WARA during the Peter Ottmar / Dave Kane days from about the early 1980's until sometime after the power upgrade to 5KW.

In other words.....Back when WARA cared about people, and in return...people cared about WARA.

GOD ! ! !......What a set of pipes!
