Happy Birthday Z100!!!

At 6:08 AM on August 2, 1983 Scott Shannon signed on WHTZ. It's been 25 Years since "Eye Of The Tiger". Happy Birthday to the Flamethrower!

Still "spittin' fire from the top of the Empire, and shakin' the ground on the planet below...". Gotta love those old Ernie Anderson Z100 sweepers from back in the day.

Anyway, it's great that the Z is still kickin' and having some of it's best numbers in years recently. I know that a lot of WABC fans from the glory days will cringe, but to me, WHTZ "Z100" is New York's legendary and premier Top 40 outlet. (at least for anyone under 50). And they've stayed in the format and had a longer run with CHR/Top 40 than what WABC did now.

Here's to another 25 "flamethrowin'" years for the Z!

I did what I think is the earliest magazine feature on Scott & Co. in both Long Island NightLife and The Island Ear,I was up there moments after they were on the air,and well before they went from'worst to first',and enjoyed a great relationship with all (including the fabulous Anita Bonita) for years until Shannon split for "Pirate Radio";
Happy Birthday, Z!

Congratulations Z100! Are they mention on the air something about there birthday or are they doing something special today?

I listen to some old tapes at the moment, also a recording from the start on august 2 1983. I still have goose bumps when I listen to there old jingles, jocks 'rapping over the music' and there different sound processors they had in the past. The 'flow' of the station is changed in all the years, it's only the name. I miss the good old days.

OOOOH - any way you can convert it to MP3 to share with us?

By the way, I read that the 100.3 FM simulcst with WVNJ-AM ended at midnight on August 2, 1983. What did WHTZ run from midnight to 6:08 AM?

IMHO, the last link to the original Z100 was gone when they recently changed the name of their "morning zoo".

Whoever thought you could play Rap and Heavy Metal Metal back to back. Z-100 was the first to do it.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Under 50? I beg to differ - I'm under 50 (49 :)) and I CONSIDER WABC to be New York's LEGENDARY, PREMIER Top 40 outlet - what Z100 did was to take the lessons of WABC (although "stealing" audio from WABC's "last days" as a MusicRadio pioneer? NOT so cool... ???) and apply them to doing a CHR format IN New York City in the 1980's - and IT WORKED!!

And let's not forget CBSFM, who took the spirit of WABC MusicRadio 77 and TRANSFERRED it into a cool, VERY enjoyable station playing oldies (ok, greatest hits :)) starting in the year 1972 and STILL doing it after ALL these years!!

speaking of WABC I just found a cassette tape of their last day of music that I forgot I made that day: I imagine that everyone was taping that day, right?

Let me jump in and send my congratulations over to WHTZ. It's not like I listen to Z-100 religiously, but their numbers and surging popularity certainly deserve much praise (and so do 25 years of a consistent format!). Besides, it's certainly a HUGE hit with a HUGE audience in the NYC tri-state area.

I occasionally check in on their morning show since it's not terribly music-intensive, and I'm pretty impressed with it. I was scanning around on Friday and was quite impressed by Elvis Duran's interview with American Idol's David Archuleta. The experience they were able to share with the listener through the personalities was really memorable (I think they debuted Archuleta's first single for the first time on the air). It was actually quite a touching moment. Just another testament to how great personality radio (the morning show and beyond) can be and how well an audience can respond to it.

Best wishes for continued success!

If I had known in 1982 that Scott would have been leaving the Tampa market, I would have stayed down there at the station I was at!

Kudos to Z-100 for one heck of a job. 25 years and it will never die or never give up top 40. The CC Joker celebrated the occasion which is the 25th anniversary of the station that started it all, Z-100.

I do have the LP called "Z-100 Morning Zoo Greatest Hits - Vol. 1" with Scott Shannon. He was the first morning guy on Z-100 before he went to WPLJ where he currently does his show with Todd. Prior to the move from Z-100 to PLJ, he had a top 40 format called "Mojo Radio" which was a stint for the station during 1991 and 1992 along with "Pirate Radio" in LA.

This is the only album I have, here is a link, so you can download the entire album. Enjoy and happy 25 years to Z-100.

The anniversary was mentioned during a local break on the Morning Show when they announce the Na-Na's or birthdays. Also some of the DJs occasionally mentioned it. I was hoping they'd do something similar to the 20th anniversary, where they played some of the top songs over the last 20 years and old audio.

thats the bad thing about having the morning zoo,i mean morning show on in different markets. they can`t do a birthday show.i used to love it when they bought the old "zj`s" back for the birthday show.to bad they couldn`t do a best of show for fla and philly today and do a birthday show on z100 . anyway happy birthday z100!!!!

I think we should congratulate John Bell on having probably what is the longest running stint on one station in NYC!

God this post makes me feel old, but makes me remember what made me ever get into radio. I met a jock who had worked at Z100 and all I could think was that has to be the coolest job ever. After all, I had grown up with Z100 and the Z Morning Zoo. And I knew there was a big difference between being a DJ and being a ZJ.

I couldn't understand when I first got into the biz how I was supposed to just say the names of the songs and artists, tell the weather, sell the station, and then basically shut up. All I could think was this is so not where I want to work.

I wanted to have fun on the radio, put callers on the radio and do whatever I could to try and make the listeners laugh. After all, this is what the ZJ's I grew up with were doing and had been doing successfully for years.

And I think almost everyone I ever met who worked in radio had told me they always wanted to work at the legendary Z100, even if it was to do just one break!

Happy Birthday Z100... still every jock's dream to add to their resume.... except maybe rock DJ's, but even Q102's and K-Rock's former DJ Booker was a ZJ for a while.
