Hard Body Coverage

Was casually monitoring Channel 7 Tyler regarding the Longview Hard Body contest suicide. KLTV ran a low key story about nine minutes into the newscast, centering mostly on man-on-the-street comments as to whether the contest should return in future years. That was followed by a package relating to the sponsor's deliberations on what the status of the contest will be.

No comment from any local media personages, since it's obvious they don't know any more about what transpired than does anyone else. The story did indicate the store across the street from the contest site and where the incident took place, has surveilance video but apparently no information was released on what, if anything, the tape shows.

News judgment on stories of this nature is a tricky job. Some editors and news directors just say "suicides don't make news." But then coming into play are the surrounding circumstances, as in this story, that insert all sorts of additional and new dynamics into the story/no story call. The Longview newspaper played it front page above and below the fold with several side bar stories front page and inside, looking at the psychological and clinical aspects of behavior by people who are sleep deprived. Obviously, this type story doesn't translate well to TV-speak since it can't be wall papered with video (unless there's video of people not sleeping).

Anybody else see how Channel 56 or Channel 19 handled the coverage? Such events and news reports on them can be a delicate editorial move. It's a damned if you do/damned if you don't proposition.

The moderator may well move this thread to the Texas TV board, which on second thought may be where I should have posted it in the first place. But since all previous mentions were on this board, posting it to Texas Television would have require4d explaining what had happened. So, if moving this post is necessary, I'll put my mea culpa here, up front.

As a person who used to work for KLTV and is friends with the GM and News Director, I will say that they are EXTREMELY cautious when it comes to stories like this. They are not going to rush to judgement and they are not going to put any "guessing" stories on the air. When they get all the facts, the story will be reported. I remember many times when we would get story leads and breaking news in the newsroom, the News Director would send a reporter out and make several phone calls before reporting anything. We actually busted KETK a few times when I was there, because KETK was quick to report news that was a complete farce or they would not get all the facts correct. I have a copy of the Tyler Morning Telegraph, where we took out a full-page ad on how WE got a story straight and our competition did not, so that's probably why you haven't seen much on KLTV.

This is very sad. I'm good friends with Jan Maynard. We worked together at KFXK Fox 51 in Longview. No one works harder at trying to make an event a success than her. This competition is HUGE every year and they do a spectacular job with it each year. I would hate to see this event scrapped, because of this. Obviously, it would be wise to screen some of these people a little better. I really hope all works out for the best.

Did any local radio stations cover this story?

Does that include KYKX and Dru milking the tragic ending of the contest for all its worth? Otherwise, if there was any local radio coverage it would have been on KTBB AM-600.

Very much agree on Jan Maynard and her expertise in marketing and promotion. Throughout the Hard Body contest over the years she has worked the phones and maintained close contact with media the nation and world over. It's a shame to see all her efforts come to such a wholly unfortunate end as they did in this instance. Obviously the sponsors are giving critical attention to the status of the contest. Whether they elect to proceed carefully with future contests or consider the event, in effect, damaged goods will be a most interesting development to watch.
