Hard Breaks At 11:45 AM ET

Just wondering, if and when Paul Harvey finally retires, and/or is replaced by someone less relevant, will syndicated shows like Glenn Beck still be required to take a hard break at a quarter to 12 Noon ET?

There are syndie 9-noon shows that don't do a Harvey break, right? I haven't checked Laura Ingraham's clock, but I don't think she accounts for the 11:45 hard break - stations could certainly time their way up from, say, :42.

Beck and other shows that do, do so to make it easier for Harvey affiliates to carry their show...since just about no non-all-news talker does a long noon news block in 2009.

To answer the other question, yes, I believe at some point, these hard 11:45 breaks will go away. I don't think it happens immediately following Mr. Harvey's exit from the airwaves, whenever that will be...I think it happens when it becomes apparent that any replacement won't last forever.

So THAT'S why Glenn Beck's third hour is structured so differently. I never would've guessed they do it to accommodate Paul Harvey affiliates.

That must mess with the schedule, as PH's Noon Visit is 15 minutes long, and there's only about 7 minutes worth of a hole if you roll through from 58:50 to :06:00ish...:06:30 if you go right up until Rush usually starts talking...

Nobody HAS to do it; in fact, I only know for sure that Beck and the ABC shows do. Since the ABC shows, like Scarborough, primarily air on ABC "O&Os" only (for now), it's a service so that they don't cannibalize their own product.

While we're on the subject of third hours, can someone explain why Jim Rome and Rush Limbaugh have different clocks in their 2 PM hours? Rome's show gives back a network :60 to the affiliate in hour 3 (and replaces the live read), while Limbaugh's show takes back a minute from the affiliate. While not in the same daypart, Dr. Laura also gives up a :60 to the affiliate in the 5 PM hour.

Gil did an incredible job with the tribute, and Doug is very good too. I hope they continue with the "Rest of the story" stories in the afternoon instead of the afternoon "news and comment".
