Hard Sell!

O.K...How many of us were not only turned off by the tight playlists we had on oldies stations (or other formats for that matter), but were constantly bombarded by those in-your-face screamer ads (mostly for cars, electronics, sporting goods, and more cars). Every ten to fifteen minutes you were hit with: WHAT SELLS CARS!!! (Hammer hitting an anvil) PRICE! (clang) PRICE! (clang) PRICE! (clang, clang!) This was back in the '80s/early '90s when I actually was IN the age demographics advertisers were supposedly seeking. Why would I want buy product from a company who not only treated me like a moron but felt I was deaf! I was careful about who I bought goods and services from, and I certainly let those I delt with know what station I heard it on. I'm done venting. Which do you think sells product better, hard or soft?

Happy New Year, and Thanks!

Soft. While it is TV, there is one product in South Bend, IN that SCREAMS at the viewer. I feel it is an insult to my intelligence that this moron thinks he needs to scream at me to buy his product. I have not--and will not--ever set foot in his warehouse to buy his product. He's not only an a**hole, but the whole a**.

Having said that, for those of us who live in NW Indiana and the Chicago area, and grew up with US 30 dragstrip, we have got to remember their commercials. "US 30 Dragstrip, where the great one's RUNNNNNNNN!!!!! These were classic commericals that ran on 'LS and 'CFL.

We have Martin's Cheverolet-Olds that screams to us every day around here..same old "we'll take your trade/get you finacned even if you['re unemployed, etc.)stuff.

Those dragway spots ran in other markets, I used to hear Detroit dragway on CKLW. <P ID="signature">______________

Sundaaaayyyyyy .. Sunday night at beautiful Motor City Dragwayyy ....see Farmer Boy Floyd and his quadruple Hemi-powered John Deer tractor burn outta the hole at speeds up to 240 miles per hour!

Also, the Snake - Big Daddy Don Garlitz with his world record setting fueler.

Sibley at Dix. Sunnnnnnddaayyyyy!

From there into the CKLW fast logo and maybe something like "Marvin Gaye - Stubborn Kind of Fella" laid under the last letter of the jingle up to vocal.

Yahoooo! Makes me grin just remembering it all. What a powerhouse station.

Re: SUUUUNNNNNDDDDDAAAYYYY!!!!!

Paul,

During the 1970's and 80's I probably did as many dragway spots as anyone in the country. I didnt do any tracks in your area, but did spots for US131 Dragway in Michigan, Tulsa International Raceway, Kansas City International Raceway, Tucson Dragway, St. Louis International Raceway, Beeline Dragway in Phoenix and a dozen others, mostly tracks with the now defunct American Hot Rod Association. My drag race spot cutting career eventualy turned into a drag race promoting career. Wow! Those were great times.

Hey Bubba Re: SUUUUNNNNNDDDDDAAA!!!!!YYYY

Hey Bubba, thats cool. "ground shakin' nitro burning line up ".I wonder if you used the same bed that is used here in New England. Do you have any old spots kicking around, would be fun to hear them. Send me a email , I would like to hear about your new career.
