Hard to beat the Eagle

My wife and I were listening to the Eagle on Saturday afternoon in the car. It's still a really good radio station. They played some great classic rock. They also threw in "new music from classic artists". The new Bruce Springsteen single sounds great.

I've been to a lot of cities, many much larger than Sacramento, over the past 10 years, and I've listened to a lot of Classic Rock stations... the Eagle is easily the best Classic Rock station I've heard, regardless of market size. The jocks are engaging and entertaining... they still talk TO listeners, as opposed to AT listeners. The music is well-programmed, with a deeper library than most, and it's presented in creative ways with all of the special features they run, like the Pot Luck thing they did for Labor Day. No one does that kind of stuff anymore (at least not well), and the fact that the Eagle's ratings are waaaaayyy above the Classic Rock norm are testament to the fact that good radio can still succeed in 2007. It's funny, the first time I heard the Eagle I heard Keller being Keller, and I thought "who the hell is this flake? He's awful!" But I've since gained a real appreciation for what he does and the artform he continues to practice, and I couldn't imagine the station without him.

I can't agree more. The Eagle still believes in radio being Theatre of the Mind. Keller's Eagle Cafe at Lunch is by far one of the best shows within a show. Almost brings me back to those nostalgic radio shows that played when radio was radio. M&B is a great compliment to the rest of the local staff with their own creative bits. With their 4 solid, well educated in the format personalities, it's too bad other stations don't model themselves after the Eagle.
