Harlan Judkins

Sad to see in the Monday paper the news of Harlan Judkins passing away. He grew up in Tulsa, OK, and began a broadcasting career which was superceded by his service as a pilot in the Army Air Corps in WWII. Following the war, he went back into radio, and in 1954 came to Memphis as program director of WMC. He also spent time with WREC, and wrapped up his radio stint in sales at 79. He had a passion for sports, especially hockey, and you may well have heard him doing PA announcing at the Liberty Bowl or Coliseum.
Harlan was one of the last great "big voice" announcers, and was a fan of the old RCA 77 mikes.

Harlan was a good man. He always wore a suit, something I never did, but he would still speak to you man to man. He started the first radio monitoring service in Memphis after his sales days at WREC and WMC ended. It proved to be of great value over the years to all the stations that subscribed. I always wondered how he talked people into monitoring one station for hours on end, jotting down all the local commercials they heard so it could be reported to his clients. I never could stand to listen to any station, including my own, for more than an hour or so at a time. It always got to sounding like mud drying on cheap tennis shoes.

Harlan always treated his clients with respect and did his work well. There are a lot of sales folk out there who could learn some valuable lessons there. He will be missed.
