Harold (Hal) Studer

I was surprised to learn early this evening that Harold (Hal) Studer, a former actor, had died on Monday, October 24th, 2010 at 88 years of age after checking for information regarding his status for the first time in several months. I wish his death had been more publicized, since he was part of the original cast for the serial "As the World Turns" in the role of Donald Hughes. I remember him mainly for his voice performances for the animated cartoons "The Flying House" (in the roles of Professor Humphrey Bumble and Solar Ion Robot primarily) and "Superbook", both of which included performances by his wife Billie Lou Watt (she died on Friday, September 7th, 2001).

The profile for Harold Studer in the Internet Movie Database does not include information about his birth, death, or his role in the serial "The Doctors" ("Dr. Simmons"). The role was mentioned in a newspaper article published by the Kingsport Post on Thursday, May 12th, 1977.

I'm not sure why that is with some people. I guess they feel like they don't want to make a big deal out of their passing and final arrangements, or maybe their family doesn't want a bunch of publicity at a sad time for them (?). I know of at least 2 examples.

Irna Phillips, the long-time soap opera writer and creator, died without plans to put out an obituary (nor did her family try to put one out). It wasn't until fellow writer Harding Lemay and his wife heard about Phillips' death that Lemay put a paid obituary in the New York Times. Phillips' protegee Agnes Nixon was not aware that Irna died until she saw the paid obituary; Nixon was about to contact Phillips to wish her "Merry Christmas" at the time (Phillips died right before Christmas in 1973).

Another initially-unknown death I know of was that of actress Gretchen Oehler. She had played maid/confidante Vivien Gorrow on Another World and on Texas. She died in 2001, but news of her death didn't make it to the soap press and to soap fans until several years afterward.

In my first post I meant Harold Studer died in 2011, not 2010. I believe that mistake indicates that I was putting too much pressure on myself while creating that post last night. I could have waited until the next day to post that message after some rest.

Totally understandable... I can't count how many times at this board and elsewhere online that I've posted something unclear/incomplete/wacky/whatever when I should have had coffee or sleep first.

I found an picture of Harold Studer and his wife Billie Lou Watt together in the December 1976 edition of Soap Opera Digest. The picture was found in the 106th post of a Soap Opera Network message board discussion about the serial "The Search for Tomorrow" (Billie Lou Watt played the character Ellie Harper in the serial).
