Harris FM10k - Dancing Plate Current Meter

Has anyone anyone ever heard of or experienced a dancing plate current meter? Meter has been replaced. It sometimes reads normal then high. And it flucuates at other times. The power stays steady and the remote metering does not reflect the problem. Harris has been of no help as they no longer support this model of transmitter.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Yep...seen that. In my case, it was static on the meter. Breathing on the meter stopped it long enough to get an accurate reading. Be POSITIVE that the plastic plexiglass is in place as that meter has 6-7kv on it. If you can find anti-static spray to wipe on the front of the transmitter near the meter, that'll probably fix it for a little while. I went through this 30 years ago on an FM-10H3 & never did get Harris to admit the issue existed. I lived with it...

I had similar on an RCA TV transmitter, except instead of jumping all over the place the meter would stick - wipe your finger on the glass and get a different reading. Solution, yep the same thing - wipe anti static solution on the meter glass.

Years ago, my old FM-25K rigs did that due to static. A little anti static spray took care of it..

What is it? Let me guess.. it's over 10 years old. You're poor transmitter is dying of old age by Harris standards. :D Continental still supports stuff from the 60s, but after 10 years you're on your own in a lot of cases with Big H.

Harris transmitters never have any problems. If you don't belive it.. just ask them. ;) On yeah... i forgot. All transmitters over 10 years old instantly are obsolete according to Big H.

At least SCMS did us a favor and bought the reseller biz. I'll re-program 1800-622-0022 back in my phone now.

I vote for the soap and water trick too.. It should work great!

;D

I still care for a 20H3 to this day...it just runs & runs. And unlike the Continetal boxes, it's so simple that a call to Harris is almost never needed anyway. Interestingly, this 20H3 doesn't have the static problem. The old Harris & old CCA models will still be running 20 years from now...and God willing, I'll still be takin' care of them.

Thank you to everybody that responded. We will try the anti static spray and see if that calms it down.

I must add that Harris is still building the HT-20 That I purchased in 1989, and they still maintain spares...maybe with a new exciter, etc., but the basic box is the same...I feel many of the old line manufacturers are slipping,,,watch out for the imports...They are coming on strong with good customer support....Tnx JBI

When I saw "dancing meter" on an FM I thought of really bad Sycnro AM.
Does it dance with the music???

It does not seem to dance with the music at all. The static spray worked like a charm. There is also one additional piece of plexiglass in front of the meter's cover. Too bad we can not treat the meter face directly.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Shucks... If it was dancing to the music, I'd have left it alone. ;D

Random dancing meters can be real "dirty dancers". ;) (Cue Medley & Warnes!)
