HARRIS GATES ONE

By "RF Board", I assume that you mean the PA board. If you find one, keep in mind that those boards are frequency dependent. So it may require a lot of component swapping to make it work in your particular transmitter.

What's wrong with the PA board on the Gates One? I've been nursing SX-1 s/n 16 along for decades, but haven't had a PA failure in years, and I think they are somewhat similar in design.

In 1984 I was replacing PA MOSFETs by the fistful, but things (such as PA board design) improved over time. ;)

the board is burned and the replacement from Harris is hugh. Running now on low power and if I can't find parts (other than Harris) I may have to break down and get another unit. Its been a good unit and I want it to last for 50yr but it just might be tired.

Bengalsfan - what are those kittens going to do this year ;D Think you'll keep your QB? I use to live about 300 Miles up the river from you

oscillator bd perhaps, power amplifier bd no. item difficult to find.

There are a number of frequency determined components on the PA board assemblies.

Quotation from the Harris Gates 1/2.5/5 manual:

The following boards may be replaced or
have components replaced without the need
for adjustments or measurements:

Interface Board
PDM Pull Up boards
PDM Filter board
IPA Power Splitter board
PA Toroid boards

The remainder of the boards have adjustments
or frequency determined components.
Refer to section on particular board
that is being replaced for information on
checkout procedures to follow.

Don't know what happened in your case, but not using the correct fuses in the PA board will burn one up in a hurry. They are fast-acting rectifier fuses and aren't cheap - but far cheaper than a new board. They are not there to protect the MOSFETs, but there to protect the rest of the board from a shorted MOSFET. Don't use fuses from Radio Shack.

Thermal cycling will loosen those little brass screws holding the PA & toroid board together. That'll cause flames when the toroid turns red-hot.

All good points everybody here is making. Another thing -- if you have a bad MOSFET, it's OK to run the board provided that the MOSFET is left on the assembly and the associated fuse is either blown or removed.

Under no circumstances should a board be run without a MOSFET, good or bad, installed in each position. Doing so is inviting immediate fireworks.
