Harris Gatesway 80

I just wanna ask if anyone here has worked with an Harris Gatesway 80 console. I haven't had the chance to look at one closely yet, but from what I've seen from pictures on the internet it has a different MO from what I've figured out (one rotary fader with 2 inputs and 2 output busses (A&P). How is the input selection made on the Gatesway 80? I've noticed that there are toggle switches above each fader but don't seem to be simple input selectors because they're identified with the device names, like TT1, 2 etc. And each fader as a different number of switches, increasing from left to right. Can someone enlighten me? Pleeease.... Thanks! ;)

I worked with the stereo 80 (slightly newer). If its the same the power supply is external. The switches above the pots allows you to "assign" a source to different channels. Nice for an engineer type to operate. It makes it a little hard to train talent but really helps when there is a problem with a channel........if its the same.

May I suggest this...your relationship with this console should be the same as the power supply...namely, external! I hope you get the inference...JBI

Speaking of external power supplies for consoles... We had plenty of fun... errrr, I mean trouble... with the supply for the Harris MicroMac console. The dang thing blew fuses all the time, even after complete rebuilds. It was mounted on the floor under the console, next to the console's similar sized rack containing a bunch of cards. The words "do not kick" were scribbled on a piece of paper taped to the power supply rack.

Ugh, what a piece of junk that thing was!

Thank you for your answers! I was told by the someone who had deal with that consoles on the working environement that the ps is internal. I hope he's right because I didn't saw any layed on the floor ::)

years ago had fun with the power supply with the Yard console. It would short out and lose audio, turned out the tube socket should have been better quality and mounted further off the board.we had a rag to put on it to prevent it from shorting until i got a replacement.Imagine doing your show or news, holding a rag on a rectifier to keep it on .get the picture.

Mmm.... Rotary pot consoles.

Sexy beasts. 8) :-*

Didn't Chicago's WGN-72 have one of these things for on-air use many decades ago? In an old encyclopedia I saw a picture of WGN's studio viewed from the control room where a similar console was being used.

Through the window you looked into the deejay (just workign the mic) and a "record turner" who actually selected, cued and played the records. The engineer just took care of the board.

Al,
I have a Stereo-80 available, if you're interested in going stereo. Working when I removed it from service just over a year ago. I'm also in the Atlanta area.

By the way, love the pics you've posted of various stations around town!

My Gatesway 80 that I'm very proud of I have at home. I love it! Thanks for posting the Gates link also.

Hey al_atl Thanks for the nice words. I'd be interested in the stereo 80. You can email me at my yahoo email from my web site. Some more radio site pictures coming.

SFM, The power supply is external and it not very big. It will sit in the palm of your hand. I have it sitting on top of the speaker under the Gateway.

OMG might it be the case of 2 versions of the very same console, one with it in and an other out? What's the difference between selfcontained and external then? ::)
The majority says it's external so I might ask my co-worker to check that out :-[
