The Phase Fixer was a real solution to the tape cartridge phasing problem. Unlike the Phase Chaser, the Phase Fixer was a solid approach to the problem. It used Burr Brown A/D D/A converters to convert the analog signal to digital so that the time differential between channels could be tracked and corrected by using a high frequency pilot signal applied to both channels during the encoding process to give a reference for time correcting the left/ right phase skew. A side benefit was also the correction of Wow/Flutter. The beauty of the Phase Fixer was that the decoder could be placed at the end of the audio chain, thus compensating for any error at any point in the audio system.
We used the prototype ( and the final product) for many years at WSM AM and WSM FM with outstanding results; the units were retired with the cartridge machines.
I still have one of the encoders if someone wants it.
John Pate (now deceased) was a true genius in addition to being a great person and friend.
