Hey all:

Anyone ever have this problem with a PT series transmitter - It started going on and off air at will. When I got there the exciter was going into RF mute however that was only after the % pwr went nuts jumping from 100% to everywhere lower, then it would start on its own again.

We've checked the exciter and it appears that its OK. We are thinking the controller board but what we have checked on it so far has resulted in nada. Any ideas?
 
It sounds as if it thinks it has a bad load.... fold the power back, then shuts down. Then recycles and does it again. I'd run it into a known good load, and if it works there, I'd go looking at the antenna. If it doesn't work there, I'd be on the phone to Quincy.
 
The load itself is ok - and the VSWR doesn't waiver. The BU transmitter is doing fine into the antenna.

When the power goes nuts its very erratic.

Have talked to Quincy a few times in the past couple of days. They pointed the finger at the exciter or the controller.

I've never had a problem with this box since I started working for them and its the first time I've had to get into it (other than cleaning) so its new to me.
 
Do you know if the sample from the power meters are working correctly? Could be a controller issue also, or all tied together. I've had a sample line go bad before and made the controller jump around and shut itself off before (Continental 3.8KW)
 
We checked the sample lines, connections to and from the controller, and the exciter. We replaced the main controller board and in the middle of the set up procedure started having the same problem again.

After another 1 1/2 hours on the phone with Quincy fingers are now pointing at the power supply (even though it doesn't show a fault). We have a new power supply control board coming today and (knock wood) will take care of it.

I'll keep you posted on the progress for anyone's (future) problems with a PT box.

Well, changing the electrolytic s on the power supply controller board was the fix. Caution fo rthose of you with a PT transmitter - there are two different boards - single phase and 3 phase. If you are going to order one of these you will need a Harris tech on the phone with you - the part #'s are not in the book for these boards.
