HARRIS STEREO 80 - AUDITION OUTPUT

I tried to feed the cart recorder input from the AUD. output. The result was almost no level coming in. The manual states (from memory) -26dbm from the AUD output. Is this the cause for such low level? If so, was it normal for the era (early 80s)? How can I boost the level?

To answer your question regarding boosting the level, I suggest a Radio Design Labs STA-1 Universal
Line Amp. This is one of their little black boxes. Here are the details:

Up to 20 dB Gain in an Audio Line
Conversion from Balanced to Unbalanced
Conversion from Unbalanced to Balanced
Conversion from High to Low Impedance
Conversion from Low to High Impedance
Bridge an Audio Line Feed
Precisely Match Audio Levels

I just bought one of these on Ebay for $38.00 plus shipping.
You will need a 24 volt power supply for this as well.

That saving turns a feature almost useless, no?

No. The Audition Buss permitted the operator to listen to the output of the fader on the studio monitors with full fidelity.
As with most consoles from that era (and earlier), they were not designed for recording from the Audition Buss. They were On-Air consoles ... designed to provide line level outputs only on the Program Buss.
An RDL STA-1 amplifier will work well for your application.
