Harris

Hehe! That's because Nautel actually cares that someone is off and has a problem. :)

Nautel has always been excellent on support.

The previous poster was right. Harris has had a 10 year trend of crappy support. The economy can only be blamed for so many things and Harris lack of support has a decade trend prior to this.

Continental is way behind the times. Their support has always been great and hasn't ever changed.

Harris is not the company it used to be by any means. But I am still managing to get a response out of them for service and parts. The number I call is 217-221-7560. The message I get when I call states that it's the console and Sage support line. If you select Sage and ask for transmitter support they do that as well here.

Harris is probably feeling the pinch from a lousy economy just like everyone else. And with not many people buying new transmitters and other gear they probably have to scale down until it gets better.

See, I have a problem with that. You shouldn't have to go through a maze to get to support. Particularly if you are off the air. Transmitter support should be an option on the menu. The last few times I have needed Harris support, I heard the guy on the phone leafing through the manual. When I call support, I'm past the manual. I have already been through it and I need help from someone who knows the transmitter more than I do.

I understand the scaling back. But Harris is ELIMINATING support on some very big selling transmitters like the SX and MW series. Their idea is to force people to buy new Harris transmitters. But their decision is ticking people off and they are turning to Nautel and BE, not Harris.

Why bother calling Harris tech support, or anyones tech support in this day and age! A friend just bought a new Nautel 50KW AM transmitter that, he claims, will run diagnostic routines, send a message to Nautel if something craps out and Nautel will ship out the part. Welcome to the 21st Century!

yea buddy! I had one of Nautel's J-1000 transmitters that suddenly started seeing reflected power. I was on the phone with their tech guy and he pointed out a couple of diodes in the forward/reflected power monitor I had overlooked. One of the diodes in the reflected line had shorted making the transmitter think it was on a bad load. I told him what it was doing, that I was 99% sure the antenna load was good (put a bridge on it and it measured correctly) and he went right to the diodes. Replaced the diode and the transmitter was happy.

A couple of years ago, it took a Harris tech an hour to realize I had a bad controller/logic card in an SX transmitter then offered to send me a new one for $800!

Yup... And if that board had not fixed the problem they'd be glad to take it back and still charge you about 160 dollars plus their overpriced "overnight" shipping charges to you. At Harris customer support is job none.
