Harrisburg AM Show Topic Wars

I am not employed by a radio station, but I do work with radio through advertising. I have purchased commercial time on a few different stations in the Harrisburg market. I read this board mostly for entertainment, but there are a few occasions I can gather where I should be placing advertising to hit the most people. For this reason, I am a channel hopper. Sure I have the music and talk stations that I personally like, but I have to keep things in perspective to what is going to benefit me and my business in the long run. I have not ever been as inclined to comment on a topic, as I have been today. This has caused me to sign up and create an account.

Having said that, I flipped to 99.3 Kiss FM this morning to hear nothing but mockery and negative remarks about other stations who apparently commented on the "bad looks" of the deejays on 99.3. I am not sure of the station who supposedly made these remarks, but 99.3 was all too quick to make it into a battle and do exactly what they were complaining about. What made the trainwreck worse, in my opinion, is that they opened the phone lines to continue the bashing and play a "poor us" role to have callers call in and say how much they love the Kiss Morning show. I do believe that the fact that they were attacked on air is unprofessional by the other station who attacked them, but it was handled all too wrong. I believe there could have been other ways to have handled the situation, off air.

I am not a fan of the station anyway, as I find all three deejays utterly annoying at first breath. I have listened a time or 2 since they tweaked their format to see if it would appeal to me as a listener. I found to not enjoy it, which is fine. However, I am sure there is a big audience unto which they appeal. I don't fall into that categoy, but they are still doing their jobs for their demographic.

The bottom line here is that I am an advertiser and I understand the characteristics that make such a business cut throat. I would like to know what the name is of the station who allegedly trashed Kiss, so that I can rethink my marketing needs if I am currently working with the station. I understand competition between companies, however there is a tasteful way to successfully do it. What I heard today was not tactful...it was, in fact, A Morning Mess.

A morning show from another state went so far as to bring this site on the air because the people trashing them were from here.<P ID="signature">______________

You went on the internet to talk about it.

You got the name of the station, and the name of the morning show right.

Mission Accomplished.

There are many morning shows that "don't" trash other stations, and are enjoyable to listen to, no matter what your personal taste. The AM' stations in the market have entertaining morning shows. I do know which station is trashing the one that you mention, but who really knows who started what? I have been in radio for a long time, and there are two truths.

Advertisers have to do their own investigating to determine where their dollars are spent for the highest R.O.I. What someone hears on a station should not determine where advertising dollars go. It's not about your opinion. There's nothing worse then someone not placing a buy, because of a personal opinion about jocks on air. If the station is reaching your target audience, that is where your dollars should be spent. But you know that already.

And......Throwing crap on air is like tossing sh*t into a fan, some of it always flies back and hits you in the face.

Put your money where it will do the best for your particular clients, and the rest will take care of itself.

Never. I have nothing whatsoever negative to say about KISS-FM, and even if I did, I surely wouldn't say it on the air, nor would any of my people. I would rather talk about things my listeners care about.
