Harrisburg and York ratings

WHP dominates Harrisburg... I guess I predicted their demise too soon. I just wonder what the demos are like. WHKF is always up and down, but they have had two solid down books since the Spring when they first went for their mainstream sound. Maybe it's not working after all? Or too much syndicated programming? I give them credit for being a fairly balanced CHR and at least having live local jocks at night. Maybe a re-branding is due? 99.3 NOW doesn't sound all that bad. The X isn't doing too well. Is it time to put WSJW out to pasture? They aren't doing so well in either HBG or York... would Hall do CHR?

First of all, you're only seeing the 12 plus numbers. Then there are all the stations that are not listed because they don't buy the book. It's hard to speculate as to how the landscape of the market should be changed based on limited information. WSJW is doing fine. It is inexpensive for Hall to operate. They can thank Paul Scott and a small dedicated staff for that. CHR would die on that signal. Even if you did a rhythmic CHR and called it something like WILD 92-7....It wouldn't penetrate the areas of Harrisburg, York, or Lancaster, where their P1 listeners would be.

Why would WSJW be put out to pasture? The ratings have been steady, about the same, for years. No major drop off. Just normal fluctuations.

About a year ago, I posted an article written on a music website by Paul Scott himself. It mentioned that Hall Radio is more than pleased with the performance of WSJW.

Remember, it's inexpensive to operate and a very easy, helpful package add-on when the ad execs from "The Rose" hit the streets. "Hey, for an extra few bucks, want to buy some time on our sister jazz station?" Similar demos. Older, mature market. Remember, this is the same market that had a beautiful music station all the way until 1999 (WNCE 92.1), about 15 years after every other market dumped beautiful music. So I'm predicting that they'll be one of the last ones to drop their smooth jazz, as well.

It's cuz Kiss signal sucks. They gotta upgrade their signal get translators or something. Also they should change their name to Radio Now 99.3 or Hit Music Now 99.3 or something. They should stick with what helped them in the higher ratings period earlier.

When Kiss signed on they immediately shot up to number one in the market (12+) but ever since WWKL has been flanking them on the rhythmic side they have kept their ratings down...which is exactly what Cumulus is trying to do (protect their main property, Hot AC Wink 104). So, signal isn't really much of an issue. Since Cumulus isn't buying the book we can't see how well Wink and Hot (WWKL) are doing, so it's really impossible to know whether Kiss is on the right track. Musically, I think Kiss is spot on -- and I am liking how dance friendly they are becoming. Hot is an absolute terrible CHR in a state of disarray. Other then the morning show, they have one other jock and quite honestly she's boring and out of touch with the demo. Otherwise the station sounds like it is on autopilot with very little new music and a weird recurrent pop/current rhythmic based music selection. It just sounds awkward and it's painful to listen to for any long period of time. Again, I don't know the numbers for the CHR demo, but I can't imagine Hot is beating Kiss. Judging by Facebook fans, Kiss has three times as many as Hot.

Nevertheless, I think it wouldn't hurt to rebrand the station. "Kiss" sounds out of date. 99.3 NOW kind of rolls of the tongue -- it might be a way to freshen up the station and continue to go for a more mainstream CHR approach.

Gotcha. I'm just trying to stir up some conversation on this board. I don't expect WSJW to go anywhere. I definitely see your point about selling it alongside The Rose.

For bossjock: You say their signal doesn't reach the P1's for CHR.... but does it really reach the P1's for Smooth Jazz? I would think a CHR targeting York may work.

BTW, now that Citadel is back we can see that Channel 106.7's numbers aren't exactly stellar in Harrisburg (and not in York or Lancaster, either). How much longer are they going to stick out this format? They already tried to evolve the station into a Hot AC in the Fall but seemed to retreat after an uproar on their Facebook page....

but a signal upgrade or a few translators wouldn't kill them. Its needed areas such as Shippensburg, Carsile and other suburbs of Harrisburg can't even receive them! I saw a commercial for them it was horrific.

They already upgraded the signal by moving it to Reeser's Summit, which gave it a lot more height from the old tower which was right next to Harrisburg in a valley. Shippensburg is irrelevant.

Dan, your comment about going after York P-1 listeners with CHR is interesting. Back in '83, when they were 92 ROCK they did quite well. There were 3 CHR's in York at that time. Now there are none. As for Smooth Jazz listeners....they are loyal...and will make more of an effort to pull in the station.

They've been doing this for...less than a year? Can't imagine them abandoning ship yet. But it's probably time to put some jocks on the air..at least AM drive.

Re: 99.3

As a parent, I'm OK with the music they play, but 99.3 jocks (including morning syndication) gets a little loose with the tongue at times, so we listen to 96.9 in the car now. Besides, 96.9 has less commercial time than 99.3. Yes, I know they're both owned by CC.

what do u define loose with the tounge? Any particular instance?
