HARRY WEST ON WILK

Bill Stuart and Bill Kelly both were heard and hired from WMLP in Milton, which at the time was a great little station.

WMLP(We're Music Lovin' People!)was truly one of those gems that live mostly in legend today. It was indeed a great radio station for such a small town. Yes, GG used to run the West Branch Valley(folks there do call it that) looking for talent. He'd get in his company owned Chrysler Cordoba and cruise I-80, then Route 15, and maybe Route 220, to see what Williamsport, Sunbury, State College, Milton, etc., had to offer. I'm pretty sure Vince Sweeney was another GG "road trip" find. I'm also pretty sure he's who replaced Chandler.

i just love these stories of WARM. i worked for susquehanna in york and the "big wigs" always had a say in programming hourly. i remember getting calls asking why are we playing this record.

does anyone know what happened jim drucker? he was part time when i worked at WYNS in the 70's If i remember he was a priest? He would not play any songs about sex!

Drucker's priesting in a small town south of Harrisburg on Rt. 15. Dillsburg, I believe.

By the way if you want the true WARM historian, the guy who loved it as a kid and got the break that made him a celebrity, It's Joe Shaver. Lives in Harvy's Lake. He lived it all, good and bad.

Last I heard, he was in Turkey. The country.

You are correct. Joey provided the bulk of the materials for that TV 44 documentary a few years back. His jovial personality belied the type of mind he had as a manager. I worked for him in Cable TV advertising and he was a great manager of people.
The classic Citedal/Shaver story is this one: On the actual day that he started at WARM, 34 years later, in 1998, the suits called him into a meeting. He had just come off two of the biggest billing months he had in sales. So he thinks they're calling him in to congratulate him and actually commemorate his 34th anniversary. Instead they fired him. Idiots! They had no clue he was there that long, no clue that it was his anniversary date and actually penalized the guy because he had such big months. "He's making too much money, it must be too easy". If the Yankees said that to DiMaggio, baseball history would be different. "Hey Joe, you make it look too easy, gonna cut ya".
Well, the chances of the Yankees and Citadel being compared professionally to each other are nil anyway.

Whatever lengthening of Harry's shift took place in the 60s, it was back to three hours by the mid to late 70s.

True. It actually happened before Harry got back. When they moved McNulty over from news to an air shift in late 1972, he did the 9am to noon shift and whoever was doing mornings, Martin, Gilbert, were doing 6a to 9a.
Anybody remember a guy by the name of Dan Donovan who came to WARM in early 73?

Yonk:

His name was DON Donovan.

DAN worked at WFIL in Philly and his real name is Lee Harvey. No wonder he changed it. DOn was anoher one who didn't last long. Seems his on air comments about management telling him to stop doing this and that made his stay short.

Back to Harry, whenever he had to do 6 to 10am, such as someone being sick or on vacation, he made remarks on air about working sooooo long. They didnlt call him "I, Me, Mine" for nothing. LOL.

That's right. Vince Sweeney worked in Williamsport. Vince was a great national on air talent. Very smooth and professional at all times. A pleasure to listen to. Did Vince work any place else before Willimsport?

By the way, WMLP stood for Milton Lewisburg Pa

That's not the first time Shaver got the shaft. GG fired him back in 71 for what ever reason and replaced him with a guy from Allentown called TJ Lambert. Shaver was walking down the hall after he got the axe and the sales manager offered him a sales job, which he of course took

>>>Drucker's priesting in a small town south of Harrisburg on Rt. 15. Dillsburg, I believe.<<<

According to the 2003 edition of the "Official Catholic Directory," which lists all the priests (sorry, the rest of the Catholics can just forget it), Jim is listed as serving in the Passaic NJ Byzantine Diocese and working at the Chillicothe OH Veterans' Hospital as a chaplain.

The odd thing about Drucker is that he wasn't exactly the shy type, which is why it puzzles me that he's so hard to find. I do know that Jim was sort of a de facto counselor/confessor to some elected political types under the dome in Harrisburg as recently as a year or two ago. Yonk will appreciate this; Drucker was/is very close to our lt. guv, CBK. According to the Chillicothe Veterans' Hospital site, he's no longer there. What's he doing in Turkey? Last I knew, the Eparchy of Passaic had a severe priest shortage. Whatever...I also heard that's where he is. Upon meeting one for the first time, Jim didn't take long before asking if you were Catholic. I think he actually gave me his blessing once, unsolicited.

T.J. Lambert? Another name from the dusty archives. Actually, T.J. Lambert the THIRD. Don Donovan rings a really distant bell. Under disussion elsewhere, Steven Allen Scott, another short-timer. The early 70s was a chaotic time at WARM in terms of turnover. The reason? In all honesty, and I love the man, GG was at one time very difficult to work for, he could be very demanding, you had to be in lock-step with him, you NEVER questioned his decisions/orders/memos.
The first time I questioned him(and it was cordial and courteous)the room fell silent, jaws dropped, doom lay in wait...then nothing happened. Someday I'll tell the story of what I questioned and why.

Jim Drucker --
I asked my contacts in the Byzantine Diocese. Reactions: Rolled eyes, raised eyebrows, "He's still around??" and other comments. He's listed in the 2006 Catholic Directory as being posted to the VA Hospital in Lebanon PA. My contact was very surprised to know that he had Mass for a class reunion (or such) in Hazleton in August.

Didn't he land some big gig at ESPN TV? Using the name Ted Lambert. I used to go to WARM on Sundays and watch T.J. do his show, got him weather copy, drove down to Terry's Diner for coffee for him. Guess who arranged that for me? None other than Joey Shaver, the guy T.J. replaced. Irony, huh?

Ahhh, that explains his closeness to our state government. The Lt. Governor's "Mansion" is a home within the boundaries of Fort Indiantown Gap, which is also very close to Lebanon. I am guessing that Fr. Drucker somehow made himself available to Catherine Baker Knoll, herself a daily communicant, but not of the Byzantine stripe. I'll further speculate he is a chaplain at "The Gap" and celebrates Mass there regularly. Jim must do Roman and Chrysostom. Has he ever been assigned a parish?

Don't know; maybe briefly.

Anyone who knew Jim is probably surprised that he isn't in some hi-viz position, he was a very personable, gregarious guy. Then again, how many hi-viz gigs are there within Byzantine Catholicism? And that is neither a sarcastic nor facetious remark.

Jim Drucker had run-ins with GG over his repeated religious remarks during the overnight shift. This was prior to the priesthood, but Jim took it to the limits and GG lost his patience.

Don Donovan came from WNBC, I believe, and his background made a big impression on Susquehanna Suits like Art Carlson. GG used to bitch that York forced DD on him as the situation at WARM worsened. Donovan came to NEPA to attend Baptist Bible Seminary, and once on scene at the Mighty 590 tried to convert his colleagues by talking them into the small production room and having a faith talk. The whole thing came crashing down when DD informed management he could no longer run beer commercials in his PM drive time shift.

True stories.

We had a CE at another 16 where I was at. He was a pleasant born-again Baptist who wanted everyone to know that Jeesus loved them, etc, all the trimmings. I was in his office one day and he was tossing Bible verses at me. I quoted back at him Bible verses that contradicted what he was saying. Heck, you can find anything you want in there if you know where to look and have taken classes in it.

The staff was outside cheering me on. At last he had met his match.

There was a WARM news guy named Dale Cleveland who I heard the same religion story about. From what I heard, Don Donovan wasn't even on the air at WNBC. He didn't sound like he had much experience.

Drucker worked during the summer of 75 at WBAX doing vacation fill ins. It was during a break while he was studying to be a Priest.

Hey, I stayed on the air even when I was in the seminary. I remember the rector running into me and saying, "I was listening to the radio and you were on it." I said, "Yeah; I do radio. Done it since I was a teenager; don't worry about it." He sputtered a bit about not doing it anymore as that part of my life was over and I said, "What I do on my own time is my own business; radio has been my life and I intend it to continue, in one way or another, for a long time. Don't worry about it."

Here I am, still doing it.
