Hartford Market 52 Now

Hartford could be a bigger market, if it wanted to. The problem is, with New Haven and Springfield being separate markets and being so close geographically, there's no room to grow. It could do what other markets have done and combine with the smaller, surrounding markets to make one mega-market. You could still have embedded breakouts for NH & Springfield much the way Long Island and Middlesex are for the New York market, and the Worcester market is for Boston. With 50 miles between New Haven and Springfield, it wouldn't be a problem sizewise. It would be comparable to other enlarged markets. The main issue would be Clear Channel, which owns stations in all three metros. If Hartford/New Haven/Springfield became one big metro, they would be way over the limit in number of stations allowed. They would not want it, so it won't happen.

Odd question here: How will the Hartford/New Britain/Middletown ranking change, if at all, once that 97.9 FM move-in takes place?

Has nothing to do with it. All based on population. Some outlying area would have to be annexed, for lack of a better term, to make up the population gap.

I wonder with Hartford now 52 does CBS keep or possible sell WTIC 1080, Lite 100.5, Hot 93.7, and 96.5 TIC.

I would think keep.

Meriden was added to Hartford at one time.

On another note about CT ratings, New Haven and Waterbury were part of one ratings market until 1973.

Most markets below 39 dropped one, due to the new market 39 being added to the market ranks.
