Hartford-New Britain-Middletown Arbitron Ratings: April 2011

I see that WTIC AM continues to drop. Wonder if that had to do with the Sox pathetic start or the end of the winter weather or that its talk lineup continues to suck??

Nice little bump for WCCC FM. Almost caught up to WHCN FM. WAQY does well in the Hartford market. I presume that its signal is a great help.

What the hell can you say about WDRC AM, which is still sucking canal water. It gets beat by WCBS AM. Pathetic.

I guess Gois hasn't got the memo that WNEZ is toast. WLAT, WRYM and even WMRQ's "La Bomba" beat the hell out of it ratings wise. A station that cries out for a format change.

I also notice that WCTF in Vernon, owned by "Mr. Rapture", Harold Camping doesn't even make the ratings. I wonder if Camping and his ilk are willing to sell the station real cheap on Monday??

That, and the fact that the Hartford market doesn't have a true classic rock station. WDRC-FM is classic hits/oldies; WHCN's playlist includes currents and recurrents. WPLR New Haven is a true classic rocker, but it's always been New Haven-focused and, besides, its signal doesn't do well once you get too far north or east of Hartford.

Yeah, I know and its a shame too. Around here the signal for WPLR gets stepped on by WZLX Lazer 99.3 in Amherst. While I listen to WAQY on a regular basis, its playlist is quite limited. Once requested something from Metallica via email and the jock on duty wrote that they don't "have that product". The early Metallica stuff you rarely hear and their 1991 album is certainly classic rock. The only place I hear Metallica is on WCCC. WAQY also won't play anything prior to 1964, and I consider the really early stuff as classic rock, too.

You're not missing much by being unable to hear WPLR. It also has a very tight playlist, limited to mid-'60s to early '90s. I think I-95 (WRKI) in Ridgefield is a little better, but that's not even a good signal in Meriden/Wallingford, let alone Hartford and points north.

WRKI-FM is licensed as Brookfield/Danbury. WPLR-FM doesn't come in quite as good as WKCI-FM does for me here in New Britain's south end. WAQY-FM is the only Springfield market station I get a half-decent signal of. (I can move the antenna for WHYN-FM 93.1, but I rarely listen to them.)

As for that La Bomba station, I know it made good business sense for WMRQ-FM to do all of that. I kinda wish that translator was still relaying WILI-FM from Willimantic. I get almost nothing on 98.3 itself here.

Not counting WFCR 88.5, of course.

Maybe they can stunt with a loop of "La Bamba"... ::)

I know, they can start simulcasting WXCT... ::)

The guy doesn't get it. WNEZ DOES NOT compete with WLAT, WRYM, or La Bomba. WNEZ plays mostly older Spanish Music. WLAT, WRYM, and La Bomba (along with WPRX which does not show up in the ratings) all playing newer Spanish Music targeting the younger crowd.

The afternoon talk show competes with WDRC-AM for the same complainers who hate living in Connecticut. There aren't enough of those listeners for two competing AM stations. TIC's John Rowland can quickly recall facts and figures, but neither he nor his partner are experienced talk hosts. Dan Lovallo on DRC has the advantage over TIC in the afternoon.

Surprised no mentions of Country 92.5's great book. Best-sounding station in the market.

The big news of the April ratings has to be WWYZ jump of over 2 rating points to secure the #2 spot in the Hartford book. They seem to be playing more music in the morning. Today's country music really has more mainstream appeal than ever before with country acts dominating the concert scene. At work in the morning (average age in the 40's) the radio plays either WDRC-FM, WWYZ or WRCH. I'm surprise with some of the songs played on WRCH. It is not your grandma's WRCH with Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Taio Cruz and Pink.

The John Rowland's "Church and State" has to be killing WTIC-AM as they continue to flounder. I will sample the top of the hour newscast on WTIC-AM, but I find myself listening more to WCBS for news. Last night at midnight WTIC-AM had a lightening quick 60 second newscast into an informercial. It's sad to see what has become of this heritage station.

During the Top 40 wars of the 60's and early 70's between WDRC-AM and WPOP, the Big D always came on top in the ratings with their better signal. Today, WPOP always beats WDRC-AM, in fact so does New York's WCBS and WFAN. Maybe WDRC-AM should go back to playing music similar to WJMJ or WDRC-FM HD2 appealing to the 60+ demographic.

WTIC-FM went up over a point at the expense of WHCN and to a lesser extent WKSS. Is it me or does WTIC-FM sound more like a CHR? WHCN seems to have an identity crisis while it tries to figure out if it's a classic hit, classic rock or a Hot AC station. How would you define this station?

My mom is gonna be 62 in December and she likes California Gurls by Katy Perry and Dynamite by Taio Cruz. Both are songs I like and I'm gonna be 29 tomorrow.

The Church and State Show is terrible. I've noticed sometimes they call it Church and State and sometimes they call it State and Church. - Either way both names sound like where the latest shooting in Hartford happened. I also dislike how they eliminated the weather and traffic reports from the top of the hour during Church and State and moved them to the 8s. As for the infomercials they've been carrying infomercials in the Midnight hour on Friday and Saturdays for several years. I think WTIC needs to bring back the all-news block in the afternoon. - Also on Fridays and Saturdays I'm often coming home at 2AM. They do CBS News for a couple mins, And then they do local news. The local anchor often sounds like he's drunk or stoned. Slurring words, mispronouncing names, struggling to get the words out.

If they moved what is on WDRC-FM HD-2 to 1360 (and its simulcast partners) I'd be happy as long as they got rid of Brad "The Dinosaur" Davis and also kept one talk show - Dr. Joy Browne.

I agree. The River seems all over the map musically. Maybe CC should pull the plug and turn it into a simulcast of ESPN Radio 1410 WPOP or launch a full-powered FM Latino Station. While La Bomba moving from 97.5 to 97.1 increased their coverage, they still have problems due to their tower being on Bolton Mountain.

Be glad it's a live news reader as opposed to a tracked one.

Noticed how 96.5 TIC is up while KISS 95.7 went down, but cume for 96.5 was down while 95.7 went up. Don't understand that. CBS Radio does hit KISS from both TIC and Hot

Surprised of the huge jump Country 92.5 had.
