Harvey Leonard announces retirement

Wonder who they will hire. Could Eric Fisher’s or Matt Noyes’ contract be up? Could Cindy be named the new chief meteorologist or co-chief meteorologist with someone new coming in? Would it be Mike Wankum for a few years?

I bet it’ll be Cindy. I doubt they’re going to hire an outsider for the weeknight news - WCVB generally doesn’t do that (Maria is the lone exception in recent memory). They tend bring in new people in morning or weekend slots and then groom them for weeknights. And honestly, they don’t need another person. Between Cindy, Wankum, Kelly Ann, and AJ, they have plenty of bench strength. Wankum would be good too, but he’s in his 60s and I think they’ll go younger.

Haven't they been grooming Wankum for the role for a while? Even promos for the weeknight team include both Harvey and Mike Wankum.

I agree it could be Cindy. They could also name her chief meteorologist and keep her in the mornings like Matt does on NBC 10. Anything is possible.

OMG, the legend is retiring! I still remember Harvey on The New England News back in the 80's while I was in school in the Boston area. I can still hear Tom Ellis saying, "Now, let's go to meteorologist Haaaaarrrrrrvey Leonard with the forecast!"

My bet is Mike Wankum becomes the station's chief meteorologist. He's been at the station the longest and was previously a chief met at WLVI before their news operation shut down.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Cindy gets it. However, I can't see Cindy leaving the weekday morning shows.

Oh, good catch, BostonMediaGuy. That picture is interesting. And if they give it to Wankum, it doesn’t disrupt the morning show. Another potential factor: Cindy has young teenagers, and doing the early evening and late night news is a tougher schedule for a working parent.

They had Kelly Ann filling in on the weekday morning show last week. She’s the weak link in the lineup - she doesn’t show as much personality or charisma on camera as her peers do. Her predecessor, Danielle Breezy (Vollmar), became the chief meteorologist at the Nashville affiliate and has been doing the Saturday version of GMA over the past few weeks. Danielle is the opposite of Kelly Ann in the personality department, and it seems to be that ABC is grooming her a network slot.

FYI: Kelly Ann is pregnant so whatever moves are made will mean more temporary moves in the not too distant future while she is out on maternity leave.

As mentioned above, Mike Wankum was chief met at WLVI Channel 56 for several years before that station was purchased and shut down. I'm going with him as the new chief meterologist.

Sounds like Cindy is the new weeknight meteorologist. Harvey said something tonight during his last newscast after seeing a video with his grandchildren, and he commented, ”They can take over tomorrow night with Cindy.”

LOL - despite Harvey’s comments, Mike Wankum is there today and Cindy worked the morning shift. Will this be like the sports anchor position, where they don’t publicly announce the successor? Though Duke is now listed as Lead Sports Anchor on the website.

The more I think about this the more I think Cindy as chief in the morning and Mike in the evening without that title is very likely.
