Has 104.1 KRBE lost its flipping mind???

And did I hear a JINGLE on air today What was that? Where is all coming from ?
I believe Cumulus wants to pimp up KRBE by adding all the bells, whistles, lasers, jingles, big movie voiceovers, ANYTHING for this cash cow. Cumulus is thinking outside the box, and wants to bring KRBE back to its own glory-when it was POWER 104.1

Hmmmmmmmmm. "....and wants to bring KRBE back to its own glory-when it was POWER 104.1" Its amazing at one's perspective. For me, the glory days were in the 1970s, when it was the Superock! Heavy duty jocks, all with flawless presentations. No whimpy voices either. The Boogyman, Barry Kaye, Kenny Miles "Miles in the Morning," Roger W.W.W.W.W.W Garrett, Mat Quinn "The Mighty Quinn," C.C. McCartney and others who were absolutely outstanding.KRBE became the giant it is because those cats laid the groundwork for those to follow. Many think Cumulus will ruin it. Some feel they will leave it alone with some fine tuning. We'll have to listen and see, while keeping in mind that the bean counters are running today's radio. Its like a pendulum. One day it will swing back to the creative folks to run radio. However, that clock is ticking. Lets hope it won't be too late.

Um... so jingles on a CHR constitutes "thinking outside the box"? Wow. I suppose next you're gonna tell us they'll start speeding up their music. Oh wait....

Hey Chuck, What up! You forgot a couple of great people who put KRBE on the map-Weaver "More music in the Morning" Morrow and Paul Christie. Sparky remains one of the giants of CHR/Top 40, and he no longer works as a DJ, but Tracey Austin, is filling in for the time being. She is still a "behind the station" employee. KRBE is looking out for new people who wants to go behind the mike, and spins some great music. I believe this extreme makeover will be completed by the end of August.

Been busy, Troy. Lot of stuff going on right now, my man. Back to KRBE, Weaver and Paul came along in the 80's. I'm certainly not trying to de-emphasize them. I am looking at the period of KRBE's impact in the 1970's. This was also the time when FM began to dismantle the AM dominance. KILT-610 virtually had no competition. The closest was 790 KULF. However, KILT had the lead since KNUZ gave up and went country in 1973.Many of the KILT DJs went to KRBE to add to its success. They had a format clock, but were allowed certain liberties in presentation. The management was infamous for paying out big bonuses for ratings increases. Those incentives combined with their individual creativity allowed a prosperous situation for ALL involved. They worked harder at putting out a quality product, knowing that they would be compensated for a job well done. Everybody made money.

I believe it's all about the cash cow stations-KRBE is one of those. as is KHJZ. keep in touch, I'll be hearing you tomorrow on my way to church :).

Without question, KRBE was THE STATION in the seventies. To this date "Miles in the Morning" is among the top 5 morning shows ever to grace this market. Look, Cumulus, like every other "bean counting" operation will run KRBE from the expense side, meaning that they will eventually sacrafice ratings for expense cuts. Cheap Channel did it and you've seen some of their stations collapse. Of the most graphic examples of this comes from TV. KRIV, with its serious expense cuts, has run its tremendous potential into the ground. Business today is no different from business 20-50 years ago. You have to spend it to make it. Cumulus won't spend it, thus KRBE won't make it. Susquehana never sacraficed investment in programming and people and all you saw was a remarkable 30 year run of success. You've seen the symptoms of cost cutting over the past few years. Great station talent has been run off, replaced by inexperienced kids being paid next to nothing. Result: XM and Sirius satellite, great network cable, oh and the Internet. Want to see where the talented people are making their bucks today....look at eBay.

I'll never forget its meager beginnings as a Top-40 station, in MONO with 100,000 watts horizontally and 15,000 watts vertically, signing off at midnight in 1968. I was working at Astroworld. The metal structures of the rides and other equipment prevented AM signals from getting in the park. KILT was awful and forget the 250 watt KNUZ. No Way! Thats when I discovered KRBE. I was amazed; it was so clear and clean. I knew then, that AM was doomed. I told folks about it. They laughed at me, "Tiller, you are out of your mind." Yeah, baby!

By 1969, my old compadre, the late Royce Edward Guinn (The Mighty Guinn) was doing mornings on KRBE. Johnny Goyen was there as well as Ted Maynard and others who escape my memory. One Friday morning, while I was busy being the manager of UTOTEM #89, in the 12000 block of Post Oak, at 10:00, Royce announced, "This is KRBE Houston leaving the airwaves." I heard it and wondered what happened. I didn't know until years later, when the story was relayed to me by Royce and Johnny.

During that time, the station was having problems with making payroll. The checks started bouncing right and left. The DJs assembled in the control room and called in the GM. They signed it off right in front of him. One of DJs took a hand held cart eraser, spinning the commercial cart rack and partially erasing all of the commercial carts, rendering them useless for airplay. With the weekend pending, the GM couldn't get anybody to go on the air. It was until the following week that KRBE returned on the air. Some of them came back. Royce didn't. He took his talents and went elsewhere.

His brother would leave KILT in the mid 1970s and become the midday personality and production director. He was Mat Quinn (Mat Guinn) "The Mighty Quinn." Of course, by that time the station was under new ownership and management.

Cumulus might flip KRBE's current format to the Greatest Hits of the '60s &'70s-just joking. You're right about how the way it runs today, airwave999. KRBE's music happens to be played by High-School kids, or The Kids who just got out of High School and they're going off to college. These Kids will have a brighter future after they leave 104.

Actually it was the other way around. In 1982, 1070 KENR became 1070 KRBE, the ill-fated "Radio Magazine." KRBE has always had those call letters on the FM. It began as KRBE, a classical station around 1959.

All I know is that 1992 called and they want their imaging back. The jingles are horrible. Absolutely rubbish. They're painful to listen to. :-\

And right now they're playing the Chad Kroeger version of Why Don't You and I with Santana. Why would they do that? I was trying to be positive, but now I'm certain they're going to ruin the station.

Hey! You guys remeber their slogan, "Hits... Without the Hype." ? Well, I believe 104 is NOW hyping up the hits. With Cumulus now taking over, 104 still DOES suck! I'd Rather be listening to 101-For some real Rock'n Roll-The WAY it Should be.

To be honest, I like the way KRBE sounds now. I took them off my presets in the past because they sounded like The Box or Party 1049. No offense, I don't care for hip-hop or rap music.

I'm not a fan of hip-hop or rap either. I'm not even completely against the music changes. (Though they played TLCs No Scrubs, earlier.) I'm really against this new imaging with the jingles and the addition of weather. The old imaging was amazing. This leaves a lot to be desired.
