Has 92.3 K-Rock fired Rover?

I'd rather that the Cleveland.com/listeningparty trolls not intruded on this thread...

I was scanning the car radio while driving in the 7AM hour and reached 92.3... they were playing a set of music. Which to me was unusual, having expected to catch Shane "Rover" French. Thought that the show was taking the day off for President's Day or whatever.

Then OMW reported this morning (see http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2008/02/rover-out-at-k-rock.html) that Rover's been effectively removed from WKRK/92.3's website, supposedly placing Rover with O&A (who have their own problems as it is, as WKRK is one of the few major-market affilis left - having lost Dallas, DC, Philly, Chicago, Detroit and Pittsburgh within a matter of months!)

What's going on? Was it something that occured on-the-air either today or Friday? Or is it due to a contract issue?

This is odd. Rover has been pulling God-like numbers in AM drive and really is the only think K-Rock has going for it. IF he is out, WMMS will probably pull out all the stops to get him once his non-compete is up...assuming again that he is out.

I wonder if it's a contract thing and K-Rock called his bluff...called off negotiations and pulled him off the website...

Agree with you about the Cleveland.com Listening Party trolls.

Some of the information posted on that site is either laughably, completely incorrect (posted for giggles by trolls or dumb fools who actually believe the information), or posts by angry losers who are jealous of anyone who is/was successful.

Anyway, curious about Rover. His numbers were very good (I believe that he was #1 18-34 and #3 12+.....big winning stuff in AM drive), so I wonder what happened.

Hopefully I am not considered one of the trolls there.
But it is curious that the show just disappears without a trace. Now as far as Rover going to WMMS, I just wonder if that wouldn't happen because he would be in competition with Lanigan. There has been a theory that states that CC protects their morning and afternoon ratings leaders by eliminating in house competition. Or would this not come into play since Lanigan and Rover attract a different age demographic?

Rover is M18-34, Lanigan is P25-54 and P35-64

I have yet to nail this down, but I'm hearing rumblings that Rover is already headed elsewhere, as in "already signed". (No, I don't know if it's CC/WMMS, but that would make as much sense as anything.)

CBS has apparently been trying to negotiate a renewal with him, but lost. He apparently - from what I'm told - didn't have a non-compete in effect.

All of this is rather unverified, so please just consider it to be semi-informed rumblings.

Rover's numbers, from what I've heard and seen, are really good. You can bet CBS wanted to keep him bad.

Can WMMS afford to get Rover? I thought Clear Channel was on a company-wide "hiring freeze".

Plus, would Rover really enjoy working for that company, given their history of neutering Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge?

At this point, anything beyond Rover being gone is pure speculation.

I haven't heard anything to support him going to 'MMS, but there's basically no one else for him in this market. Radio One and Salem are your two largest operators in Cleveland outside CC and CBS...need I say more? And he's not exactly in line to replace ESPN's "Mike and Mike" on WKNR/850.

For that matter, I haven't even verified if the accepted offer is in the Cleveland market.

But Rover basically confirms the rumors above at his blog...more here:

ok........

here's what i bet is the case........

1. no way cbs fired "rover"

2. he will end up on a cleveland cbs competitor (my guess is he is already signed)

3. whomever did not put him into a non-compete....will be "spending more time with his family" soon after rover's new deal is signed......unless of course it was joel hollander who agreed to the no non-comptete...in which case he is already enjoying more time with his family

4. "rover" will put this cleveland competitor on the map........

5. even though joel is gone.....somebody within cbs will be made a scapegoat.......maybe in cle. maybe within corp.

6. cbs never believed he'd leave

7. cle. cbs will have to put a fork in "KROCK" cause it'll be way done.......

8. can you say "fresh" cleveand........?????? !!!!!!!!!!

If K-Rock dies, it won't be "Fresh". CBS has WQAL and WDOK. Both are strong. Q104 has killed Mix. Based on the last two years, you might say they've taken a chunk out of Majic with WDOK as WMJI has been trending downward. WMJI is still stong, but it ain't what it used to be.

Country could be a good choice, if they flipped the format, and who says they have too?

WGAR could be easily overtaken. With a fun, interactive presentation you could kill the old and tired sounding WGAR.
99.5 is the one station in Cleveland you can say sounds voicetracked. There are some great talents there, but are they being used properly?

I'm sure CBS will find the fortitiude to bring a second country station to Cleveland rather than the only country station in New York...

My question is this: (if this IS true) with CC on a company-wide "hiring freeze", how are they going to hire 3 new full-time employees (Rover/Duji/Deiter) and conceivably 2 part-time employees? (Jim/Dumb)

Even if they WEREN'T in this so-called freeze how would they do it? Are more heads about to roll at Oak Tree because of this? (assuming they are going there)

Another factor comes into play as well. You can count out 100.7 being the future home of KISS if they truly have to spin off 96.5. All eyes would turn to 106.5. Hmmm.

Who says you have to hire Dieter, or for that matter Jim or ''Dumb''...none of the three bring anything to the show that's remotely entertaining..

All you need is Rover and Duji..period..

Its time for Rover to grow up and start refining his act for the long term, career wise....it may be that CBS was looking at what it was spending in Cleveland, figured they had nothing to lose by putting Opie and Anthony there for the short term, and likely Adam Corrolla for the long term..

Well... there is a wild card here.

Lanigan did openly state on-air a few weeks ago that he won't seek a renewal of his contract. You can bet that when he leaves, Malone and Chip - who also have decent contracts and already have successful side businesses and gigs - will be out the door, too. If he were to leave in the next few weeks, then CC hiring Rover and Duji (or any of the others) would be balanced out.

(I must stress that this is total speculation on my part. I don't think anyone knows just when Lanigan will leave, or if CC even had a contigency plan in place. For all we know, Rover could be going to Barstow, California...)

But wither WMJI? They would will have to take either a syndicated show (B&T scoot over?), or a basic music show... either way, considering just how Majic's music selection and imaging is, that can't be good.

And I'd agree on Kiss. Given that 96.5 has to be sold off, and if Rover was to majically land on WMMS, say buh-bye to Mix 106.5... it's too damn simple.

Let Bob & Tom go, and get Rover. Can't see letting Maxwell go.

I can't see that happening. Even with JL gone from WMJI it would still be a cash cow... for a short time.

WMJI would have to be flipped - and to what?

If anything Brian & Joe move over to WMJI IF (when) Lanigan leaves. And when Lanigan leaves I believe that Jimmy and Chip "retire" from radio. Neither needs the money.

Brian & Joe would be a decent replacement for John, especially with WMJI seeking to continue to "young up" the classic hits/oldies format (which cant be done... I digress)

WMJI, outside of AM drive, sounds like crap. Imaging and music selection is terrible.

I see Rover going to WMess. Common sense.

Just guessing here:

Rover moves to WMMS mornings.

When Lanigan leaves WMJI, Brian and Joe take over. WMJI then updates to more of the music that is currently on MIX 106.5.

MIX 106.5 folds and KISS moves to 106.5 from 96.5

CC sells 96.5, probably to company that could do them the least harm, like Radio One or Salem or some religious outfit or (please please please) WCLV.

Okay...this is starting to make more sense.

Good Karma potentially could purchase 96.5 and do very well with the station. He also could buy the intellectual property of WMMS.

Clear Channel moves Kiss to 100.7 and used WMVX as leverage to just pry a few bucks out of QAL and DOK.

Remember Clear Channel is on a hiring freeze. They cant just bring people in the building because they want to. ALSO you must remember that Clear Channel Cleveland has lost millions in revenue in the last couple of years. I dont mean a couple million...I mean MILLIONS! Why would San Antonio give the yuppies a gift like this?

My guess is he is inked to move over to WKNR-AM. This could be temporary but eventually be transplanted onto the new 96.5 THE HOG - Cleveland's Rock Station!

I seriously doubt he's headed to WKNR-AM 850

And what is this '96.5 THE HOG' you keep mentioning? Where do you pull this ish from! What gives you any reason to believe Good Karma would buy a CC FM, that CC would sell to them to begin with, and let alone that they would flip it to rock and name it after a pig? I know I know, Milwaukee has a station called The Hog. This ain't brew town!

Somebody send kentucky some bacon to go with his crispy strips! Send a biscuit too?
