I’d like to revive this topic and approach it at a different angle. If flips/changes in other markets prove successful, often times radio will duplicate the same elsewhere hoping for a quick fix. There’s nothing new about that.
What I don’t like about radio is decisions to flip are not usually listener-centric. From what I have observed, management/owners look at their cluster and identify target(s) that will improve its’ performance. Almost like using a drop down-menu they pick the format that will deliver that target quickly and cheaply. If that format and genre of music is already super served, it doesn’t matter.
What we know about PPM is a typical panelist will listen to/be exposed to at least 6 stations. So much is based on sharing cume among a number of stations. This probably explains why so many stations sound alike nowadays. There’s lots of button pushing. I applaud the owner who takes a different course.
Super serving formats that are popular in the market and deliver are today’s status quo. Here in Jacksonville, none of the major owners look at improving their cluster performance by identifying programming holes and then building on something unique to attract that P1/target – whatever - that cluster needs. I suppose I set myself for disappointment. Every morning I check this board in the hope something changed overnight bringing more format variety to Jacksonville. Given the nature of radio, something eventually will change. Still, I don't believe we will be more inclusive of the community served until one of the owners cash out, sells part of the cluster or embraces an entirely different strategy at winning.
When we talk of flips, poor performance is often cited. But we have seen many occur because of radio politics. Impacted listeners are never considered. It’s disruptive to advertisers as well. It’s also expensive. But a lot of ego drives these decisions and sadly the bonus incentives, especially at the GM/MM level are a big part of the problem. I think it sucks, especially when talent looses their livelihood for all the wrong reasons.
To end on a positive note, I am so happy former PD @Magic 107-3, Neal Sharpe, has landed a PD gig in Asheville NC programming an AC and AAA. I’ve had the pleasure in meeting a good number of broadcasters in my life. Neal is one of the most positive and down-to-earth guys I’ve ever met. Congrats is certainly in order. It appears he has found a company who recognizes his talents. How I wish he and his team could still be making magic here and offering something a little different than all the rest.
