Has B98.5 Killed the 98 at 9?

OMG! Jordan Graye just said they were playing fifty minutes of music this hour, eleven songs in a row. Jordan DON'T play the commercials that's scheduled I assume in the 3rd or 4th quarter hour, wait until after 10:30. Jordan you are the last line of defense to save the 98 @ 9, we're counting on you to do that right thing, you can do it! How are people going to start their workday from this point henceforward?

OK they just came out of spots stating that B98.5 FM is "doin' it again", fifty minutes of music for your workday. And they're playing U2's "Beautiful Day". Maybe there's a hidden positive message of hope in all this

Normally when you're (B) getting torched by a competitor (Star) you don't give up your benchmarks. On the other hand, B is down about 25 percent from their ratings from a year ago. So you can bet they are taking it in the shorts in billing. This is probably a mandate from people sitting in the penthouse. It takes a lot of money to financially support the people who decide who's going to get laid off because times are tight.

Nyte Ryder, I appreciate your thoughts, but why are you talking business strategy at a time when Caller 10 could be suicidal? As a matter of fact, I'm wondering if one of the posters would volunteer to watch him.

I'm OK. No need to call 911. But I may be starting a new job soon, so I don't know where I'm going to find the most music to start my workday. Maybe I can hire Jordan Graye to sit in my cube and she can do live breaks with my iPod library. I can see it now, somebody comes to my cube to ask a question and Jordan can interrupt and say ... "Hey, excuse me. We're in the middle of the 98 @ 9. Can you come back later?" And later Kelly McCoy can announce ... "Hey it's your good friend the business analyst from the 3rd floor. He's got another long set of new requirements to impact your project."

B98.5 has rolled out 50 minutes in a row, with the stopset from :35-:45 (yes...10 minutes of commercials in a row). I know their short lived 90 minute block at 4:30 PM bit the dust after only a couple of weeks. After looking at their last songs played feature on their website...it looks like the 98 @ 9 is gone as well.

B98.5 has made other changes as well. The jingles are gone. They are now replaced with announcements hawking the 50-minute commercial free blocks. I don't think this is going to help their slipping ratings...this will hurt them even more. 10 minutes in a row of commercals is enough to make me change the station for that period of time.

As an advertiser, I wouldn't want my spot to be buried deep inside a 10-minute stop set. This is a PPM strategy, but they're not considering their advertisers, the people who pay their bills.

They're doing the same thing with The River, by the way.

I stand corrected Roddy. I will take first swing on the Suicide Watch even though he says he doesn't need it. The first warning sign is denial.

Just guessing but the move of putting all the spots together might be from Cagle. Didn't he do the same thing at The Beat from time to time?

Hey so excited hope everybody had a great weekend! We're just minutes away from B98.5 FM's 98 at 9. Have you heard about it? It's over ninety-eight minutes of music every weekday morning at nine, a great way to start your workday! It's why every year when the balloting comes out I vote B98.5 FM #1 for the most music while I listen at work. I am out of town but I will be listening online at b985.com. Yesterday morning when I was leaving I was listening to Kelly Stevens. I guess because it's the weekend he didn't do much show prep, he just kept saying in nearly break how he guessed the rapture didn't happen and how we're still here. What's even more amazing is I bet he voicetracked it before the rapture would have happened, how did Kelly Stevens know the outcome?

Hey B99 is playing Black Eyed Peas. I love soft rock! "And then we'll do it again" Fergie and her co-horts sing! "Do it again" as in fifty minutes of music! Maybe this is the hidden message B is trying to tell me, despite the end of 98 @ 9 "... tonight is going to be a good good night." Jordan just said that long music sweep is great way to get ready for the upcoming three-day weekend!

and now TLC "Don't go chasing waterfalls". Maybe that's a metaphor, "waterfalls" are the other radio stations. I should stick to the B that I am used to.

Maybe Jordan can voicetrack your workstation.

Not only has B98.5 killed the 98 at 9, but they also stopped playing any song prior to the 1980's according to yes.com. No more will you hear Gaynor's "I Will Survive," the Stone's "Beast of Burden", Joel's "She's Always A Woman," and the like. Now, they are closer to leaning to a Hot AC station probably to compete with Star 94 audience. I just saw they played Lady Gaga's "Pokerface" earlier today. I'm not sure how this will play out in the next book, but 98.5 definitely has weaknesses and probably part of it is attributed to their playlist, hence their lowest rankings since 2006. If there was a station format change by the end of this year, and the new format was soft AC or AC, would you think that the new station would beat 98.5 in the ratings? I say it is a great probably that it will if given some time.

That will help Atlanta's Greatest Hits, which already has a 70s-heavy playlist.

Checking http://www.archive.org/, perhaps if history repeats itself your concerns for caller10 are warranted. But I still can't find Curtis' (and translator's) posts, my quest continues.

I'm very surprised that no one else seemed to notice...or care...that this past week was the 20th birthday of Curtis in PA. It was noted on the Board main page. For those of you new to the Atlanta board, Curtis was a frequent poster here until a life-changing event about a year ago.

Curtis was a great fan of Peach 94.9 and was on a relentless crusade to establish soft AC stations called Peach across the U.S. He was also a great humanitarian, giving selflessly of his time and energy to purge all hot AC jingle packages from soft AC stations. He often met with Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum toward this cause.

Then, a little less than a year ago, something happened to change Curtis' life. He read a post here from Rodney Ho announcing that WPCH was going to drop the Peach moniker and become 94.9 Lite FM.

This sent Curtis into a depression from which he is just now emerging. And while he was unable to function, several soft AC stations purchased hot AC jingle packages. Two steps forward and one step back. And worst of all, Curtis Translator, whose posts always immediately followed Curtis' posts, lost his job.

I was thrilled to learn that Curtis has made it to 20 but was surprised that no one had the kindless to acknowledge it on this board. Where was The Real Other Neil on this? Frankly, I'm embarrassed for all of us.

Do we have an archive of Curtis's posts? ... there should be a tribute site dedicated to the man and the mission....CurtisInPa.

First off a Happy Belated Birthday to Curtis! i don't really know him since I am new to these boards. However I know exactly how he felt. When peach changed its name i was very upset having grown up with the station (especially listening to it for countless hours each holiday season since i was a young child in the mid 80's). In fact it took me months to get over the change and I refused to even listen to the station for a few seconds. I am still sad, but I have gotten over the loss.

Hope Curtis had a great day!

Some of you guys need to get with the times - 80s and Lady GaGa is pretty standard for AC these days
