Has BOB changed their playlist since adopting the format

Well, obviously they have to a certain degree, but here's my question.

I don't listen to the station much. When I would hear an old favorite and then something of a completely different musical genre that I did not care about- I just changed the dial.

However, have they stopped doing such extreme format changes- like going immediately from Joan Jett to Donna Lewis?

I'm trying to figure out their rise- if they tweaked the songlist just right- or if maybe people are having more crossovers in their musical tastes.

Well Here's a sample of an hour playlist from bob FM per yes.com
Rolling Stones-Start Me Up
REd Hot Chili Peppers-Under The Bridge
Nena-99 Red Balloons
Bruce Springsteen-Born In The U.S.A.
Looking Glass-Brandy Youre a Fine Girl
Uncle Kracker-Follow Me
Eagles-Heartache Tonight
Kenny Loggins-Footloose
Boston-Foreplay/Longtime
Thomas Dolby-She Blinded me with Science
Gavin Degraw-I Don't Wanna Be
Deee Lite-Groove Is In The Heart.

To answer your question, I think they are still basically playing the same train wreck from when they first debuted in November. The Rolling Stones into the Red Hot Chili Peppers isnt too bad. However, going from Gavin Degraw into Deee Lite is a little crazy in my opinion.

I'd have hit the station button as soon as I heard "There's a sailor...". But that's only if I was still listening after "Under The Bridge".

The thing is, Bob isn't really all that good, but everything else in town is just so boring, bland, and predictable. In the land of blind men, the one-eyed man is king.

I agree that Pittsburgh radio in general is boring, bland and predictable. However, Bob might have trainwrecks in their music, but they are not as predictable as other stations are in the Burgh.
Edited by toddjammin on 04/17/06 06:10 PM.

You raise an interesting point. While I agree that Pittsburgh radio is bland, boring and predictable, I'd prefer to hear a switch to edgy, entertaining, and somewhat unpredictable. However, even though train wreck song sequences definitely fit the requirement for being unpredictable, they aren't edgy, nor are they entertaining.

Two out of three ain't bad, but one out of three just ain't enough.

Okay, wait a second here-

You say Pittsburgh radio is bland and predictable.

Name me a city where the radio stations aren't bland and predictable.

This isn't to pat ourselves on the back- but wouldn't the more accurate statement be-

With the large corporations owning radio- while they may have increased some professional standards- they have also feared creativity.

This applies in Pittsburgh and just about any other market you can name.

Hence, the creation of JACK- which is basically "Clean out the Gen Xers Record Collections."

I still think the format is basically a fad. Still, if this format is to have staying power, then perhaps we will have learned that audiences care for a bit more diversity than we originally thought.

When it comes to radio in other cities, I am both ignorant and apathetic. I don't know, and I don't care. I'm not much of a traveller, and don't spend very much time in any other cities. I live in Pittsburgh. I listen to the radio in Pittsburgh. Whatever the radio stations in other cities sound like means next to nothing to me.

True, but this is the Pittsburgh board, so the discussions in here are about Pittsburgh. Frankly, I'm still surprised that corporations like Clear Channel even bother with the pretext of "local" programming. I've said more than once that they should simply do nationwide networks with the same program sent out to all of their stations for most of the day, just like CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox do on television. It wouldn't make radio any better for us listeners, but since when does the management of any corporate radio company give a damn about us?

There are dozens of reasons why listeners pick one station over another. Trying to pin it down to any one reason is impossible.

I agree 100% with you. 8)

I was surprised to ehar from a couple of non-radio folks that they clearly noticed the less-varied playlist and while they preferred the way it was, they still like its variety.

A few guys at the office will put Bob-FM on every now and then. I asked them about whether they liked it, and they all gave me pretty much the same response: "It doesn't suck". It's a sad state of affairs when the most enthusiastic response generated about a station is "It doesn't suck", and the people who think that are talking about the station that they like the best!
