His problem is he makes money, but spends too much of it (expenses)

He's in charge of the CC Raleigh cluster and he's a good guy with a lot of experience and and good track record...

BUT...

NOBODY can make chicken salad out of chicken $h*t

Thanks "Ditto", so it would be something along the lines of Clear Channel adding 106.1.."The Rooster" to an area which already has two strong Country Stations......WQDR and KIX-Country ???

It seems funny how everyone is so quick to jump on format bandwagons. I noticed there are hardly any active rock stations under the CC banner. guess it makes sense if they dont make money. but I guess country is the hot format right now. if entercom would want to take on TQR in Greensboro and Clear Channel would try to topple QDR in Raleigh, someone must think Country will win. plus Country coming back in L.A.

having said that, I'm almost afraid to post this in fear of vicious keyboard strokes condeming my ignorace...

*winces for the blows*

Ben,
I am not condeming ;D
There have been many attempts to overtake WQDR, and all of them have failed. I personally am not a fan of Country Music, I just notice WQDR has always been at the top or near the top of the rating books, so they must be doing something right.

Interesting Trivia: A few weeks ago, I met one of the founders of the station now called "G-105", and he told me the
started out as a Country Station WDCG-FM..."Durham's Country Giant" ;)

I am not in the Raleigh area, so I am not totally familiar with what is on the air there, but in my experience the doing something right usually has little to do with the music, and much more to do with community involvement and the total package of the station.

Just like in my area, a country station is the ratings leader most of the time for the whole market, but its not the music putting them there, not totally. It is because they are involved in the community, always out in front of the people, and many other things that keep them on top. The music is part of it, but is not the total answer.

I don't know that 106.1 The Rooster has established themselves as a country music station yet. The only advertisements I've seen are for John Boy & Billy, who have already failed 4 or 5 times in the Triangle. QDR regularly has advertisements with country stars singing country music and saying "94.7 QDR" over and over.

I worked with Dick at WMAG and WWMG some years ago... enjoyed working with him. All around great guy who gave you the tools to do your job and let you do it. I dunno about now, but he used to be an avid golfer...

It's interesting to see how much G has changed over the years. I had a friend who listened to G when he first moved to the Sanford area, didn't for a while, tuned back in, and wasn't happy with how raunchy it had gotten. I told him that's the Top 40 sound in general.

As for keeping in the community, I totally see that as being a BIG part of radio, country especially. MAG's Cure Kid's Cancer, all of TQR's stuff, even JMH's Toys for Tots. VERY important to win in my opinion

Another interesting point: the WDCG calls, while officially referring to G's country past, can also refer to the current format:

Thanks Call Me Sherlock,

I have been in touch with Keith a few times over the past two years. He answers most of my radio questions for me!
"Beef" is one of the good ones ;D

ACC tournament radio coverage

Here's something that is screwed up: Ever since WRDU took over from the former WTRG (now 100.7 The River) as the Triangle's FM affiliate of the Tar Heel Sports Network, a lot of the broadcasts 100.7 formerly carried did not carry over to 106.1. For instance, every year the Tar Heel Sports Network carries all the games of the ACC men's basketball tourney, but 106.1 only carries the Carolina games, whereas 100.7 did carry all the games along with the network, even finishing out the 2004-05 season after becoming first The Bull, and then The River. Now, with the unfortunate death of WDUR 1490/WTSB 1090, I have to tune in to either WCHL 1360 or WRBZ 850 The Buzz to get the games that The Rooster doesn't carry. The format change this past October had nothing to do with it either, as 106.1 did the same thing last season (2005-06) before they became The Rooster. What I am curious about is: Did Clear Channel have a hand in this (they own both The River and The Rooster)?

Stations airing one of the ACC networks originating in NC (UNC, Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest) have for years been required to carry ALL tournament games in order to get the regular season. Now that the league has expanded and the daytime, weekday sessions last two days, many stations are rebelling!

The FMs seem to get away with airing only one team's games, while the AMs seem to be saddled with the whole tournament.

Not many of the stations really want the whole thing!

I noticed when Duke wasn't playing I could still listen to Mix 106 (not that I would want to; see the standards board) or Country Legends 98.3.
