Has Emmis finally admited the mistake?

The mistake of flipping Q to Alice?

For those of you that don't know, Emmis operated a CHR/Pop on 104.1 called Q104 until about 96ish, 97ish until they decided that CHR didn't work in St Louis(their words) and flipped 104.1 to Modern AC as Alice 104.1. At this same time, Jacor acquired 104.9 and moved Majic to the 104.9 frequency and fired up it's own CHR/Pop Z107.7. Needless to say Z became a success and plunged 104.1 in the 1-2 range and thus set off a chain of format changes and low ratings that followed.

Some say Emmis should have just admited a mistake and brought CHR back, but Emmis wouldn't do that, instead opting to try ideas in the hope they find a "big hit" with something else. But in my viewpoint, they are admitting their mistake by selling 104.1. It's a "we tried everything and we can't make anything other then CHR work."

It's funny, but Radio One could actually have this station in the 3s, something that hasn't been seen since, yes Q104.

Actually, $20 million is probably about right for 104.1. Remember, when Zimmer bought it not even 20 years ago, it went for $1 million! It's really a pretty marginal St Louis signal; it's only a C2 with its stick in North County, and you can pretty well forget it on anything but your good home stereo and car radio in Jefferson County. Also, the signal becomes mediocre in the more affluent areas of St Clair County (yes, there are a few, at least more affluent than what people normally think of when they hear St Clair County!). All in all, it's not that impressive of a property.

Hell, Emmis made a mistake back in 2000 when they sold WTLC-FM Indianapolis to Radio One. That station went from the top 3 to the top 10.

But remember when Emmis sold WTLC-FM to Radio One. WTLC-FM went from powerful 105.7 to a weaker 106.7 frequency. I wonder why TLC dropped from the Top 3. Plus Emmis sold to Radio One in late 2001 with the official change coming in Feburary of 2002
Edited by MikeFromIndiana on 10/09/05 02:01 AM.

The reason why WTLC dropped from the top 3 is because Radio One applied its cookie-cutter Urban formula to the poor station. They killed the local morning show for Tom Joyner, moved it from 105.7 to 106.7, removed the hip-hop from the station's playlist and placed it on WHHH, and made it an Urban AC. Bascially, Radio One screwed up a perfectly good heritage Urban Contemporary and replaced it with a mediocre-rated Urban AC and a winner-by-default Urban fronting like a Rhythmic.

Radio One was forced to move TLC to 106.7. They didn't have a choice Emmis sold them TLC property. Emmis kept the old frequency for B-105.7. It wasn't Radio One that killed the local morning show for Tom Joyner. Emmis was the one who stole Tom Joyner for TLC at 105.7 from the Bill Shirk and then WGGR-106.7 the Touch who had Tom Joyner at 106.7 from the time Shirk flipped 106.7 from Oldies to Urban AC. So dont go Blaming Radio One for the Joyner in the morning at TLC thing it was predated to Radio One getting TLC. That was an Emmis decision to try and down Bill Shirk and 106.7 Competeting Against them. Radio One bought the Bill Shirk porperties prior to getting 1310 and TLC Intellectual Properties from Emmis. I live 30 miles from Indianapolis and followed the TLC/Panche/Emmis/Radio One/Shirk saga over 105.7/106.7
