Has KTU gone Hot AC?

I've been listening to KTU this afternoon and heard Madonna flip to Big Mountain "Baby, I love the way." They then played one song that could arguably be danceable and now they're onto Marc Anthony.

Has this been a phenonenon going on for a while now? I haven't listened to KTU for about three years, and it certainly sounds differently now ... a watered down Hot AC at best.

It went from Rhythmic Top 40 to Rhythmic AC last year.

They probably feel that going that route is more likely to reach their intended audience of 25-54 women. They probably also made the decision, in part, to counter what Mix 102.7 was doing, though with the demise of Mix, KTU hasn't shown any signs of going back to its older music mix. Not that there's much of a difference though....103.5 KTU was never a "party"-like dance station, and was always heavy on the recurrents and 80s and 90s stuff.

That being said, the station's overall numbers were flat for many books in a row, before nudging up slightly in the last book (most likely listeners it picked up after Mix 102.7 went away), so either KTU's listeners are willing to listen to the station either as it is today or as it was before last year, or they have made gains in desired demos that have matched up well to losses they may have had in less desired demos, balancing the overall number out.

its probably hard having 3 stations that mainly sound the same, power, z and ktu, so it being rhythm chr dose not make sense

Power, Z and KTU never sounded close to the same. Overlap? Yes. But Z might play Ashlee Simpson or Maroon 5 while Power might play some old-school jams not heard on Z100, while KTU might also play (or would have, before tweaking last year) some newer dance music that wouldn't be pop-friendly enough for Z100 and wouldn't be touched by Power.

KTU is also heavily dayparted... during Diane's show it has a lot more older jams and slows down a lot... where as the night with Jagger, even when its older, its still upbeat....

I found XM-81 BPM has been pretty good. I haven't listened for about a month, but it's been OK. I'm just afraid that the way KTU was sounding the other night, I'd flip to it and hear Snow Patrol or something awful like that.

I only wish that Party 105 had the money to buy out KTU and similcast in the greatest city in the world. NY's Dance Party Network 103.5 and 105.3! Dancing from Montauk to Morristown. But that ain't gonna happen.

Power, Z and KTU are all Clear Channel stations, so there will be some overlap, but they all target different audiences. Z and KTU are easier sells than Power to advertisers. AC is such a generic term that it is likely that you will hear some overlap. FYI KTU is a Rhythmic AC station.

Z plays "This Is Why I'm Hot" and Fall Out Boy, Daughtry and Biggie; you won't be hearing any of that on kTU; there is a clear difference,Z is a Top 40 station...

but look at the top 10 on ktu's website, all songs can be heard on z

they are both contemporary 'hits' stations, and they are sharing some records, but you won't be hearing "It's Raining Men" or "This Time Baby" or Alisha or The Cover Girls on Z anytime soon...
there are distinct identities

Party 105.3 format would do well on 103.5 but clear channel would never take a chance on it.. oh BPM on xm is horrible now..... its embarrassing new york doesnt a decent dance station. KTU sucks now it worse every year.

I agree that NYC needs a good dance station, BUT.

People on different radio message board websites griped unceasingly about Mix 1027, and now it's dead.

Likewise, people are griping about KTU. Some people are into rythmic and Classic Dance. I'm one of them.

I'm sorry that you and others don't have what you want, but hey, let us live, ok?

I logged onto KTU's stream the other day..... I dropped off in digust within 10 seconds ;D

I'd rather listen to Music one or the original HOT 97!
