Has the FAN gotten clueless?

All those big-name hosts yet WFAN misses important stuff. Two examples yesterday:

(1) Danica Patrick wins her first Indy-car race -- in Japan, early Sunday NYC time. The story made the AP wire yet the FAN never reported it in any updates. I learned of Danica's win on (of all places) Fark.

(2) ABC7 pre-empts the NBA playoffs for the Pope's Mass at Yankee Stadium. Richard Neer said on the air -- yesterday afternoon, just before game time -- that he checked around and couldn't find a station carrying the game. ESPN2 aired the NBA game in the New York area. In fact, ABC7 had a big red "Program Notice" bar at the top of their website all week long to alert viewers.

AFAIK The FAN also missed Tom Glavine (former Mets pitcher) going on the disabled list for the first time in his career.

Did every NYC TV station carry the Pope's mass yesterday? I was in Newtown, CT yesterday and I saw the mass on 5, 11, and 7. Didn't check 2 or 4. The Pope Mass from FOX 5 was even on in the bar we went to.

Yet when the daughter for a former New York Giant wins a popular TV singing competition, that manages to make a 'FAN SportsFlash. Makes you wonder where their priorities are.

Heard 2 more examples on my way home in the 5 PM update:

(1) "Afternoon baseball" referring to the Red Sox game. Today is Patriot's Day -- a legal holiday in Massachusetts -- which means first pitch at Fenway was at 11:05 AM.

(2) Boston Marathon results: the men's winner is mentioned, the women's winner is not.

The Fan NEVER EVER cares about Auto Racing, which annoys me to no end. I think the only winners they announce are the Daytona winners, the Indy winners, and whoever wins the Sprint cup.

The coverage of racing has gotten even more barren since Imus' departure.

NASCAR isn't huge in the NYC area, but it does have a following. The very fact that the WNBA and MLS gets play on 20/20 updates and NASCAR doesn't really burns me up some times.

NO NASCAR = MUST HEAR RADIO STATION !

2 more examples last night during station-ID breaks in the Mets game:

(1) Nothing on the Pacman Jones trade. ESPN and Fox Sports had that story on their websites by 8 PM.

(2) No scores from NBA playoff games in progress.

The FAN did have room in those station-ID breaks to promote the Boomer & Carton morning show.

Yeah. Edgy commentary there. Remind me, what happened to sports on wax? Oh wait...

You have ten seconds. Heaven forbid the Fan promote it's morning show over out-of-market playoff games or a trade that hadn't been confirmed yet for a player who can't even play.

The Pacman Jones trade was confirmed to the AP by 8 PM. Fox Sports ran the AP account.

WFAN station break around 9:30: Promo for Steve Somers (after the Mets game) and Boomer & Carton (morning show).

WFAN station break around 10: Score from Yankee game plus promo for Boomer & Carton.

These days you have to be a ******bag, a hack or a male chauvinist pig to work on air at The FAN.

Phil Mushnick, is that you? ;D

the fan has never ever cared about women's sport. of course they're not going to give you the name of the women who came in first. secondly, it's not that they're clueless. they have gotten CARELESS. there is a difference.

Totally and utterly false. One of my main points of contention with the FAN is that they WILL give out the score of WNBA games but they will not give out results of races, when the races have a much bigger fanbase in the NYC area than the WNBA. (And before you scoff, think: how many "3" stickers do you see on cars, hats, etc. in the area. Now, how many Liberty and/or Sun gear do you see on people?)

I'm guessing the play the WNBA gets during updates is probably some behind the scenes political thing with David Stern, but still, race results should get some action.

believe it or not, they used to give out race results. back in the 80's. like 86, 87. jody mac also used to talk about belmont and aquaduct. not anymore. although m&md, they do do a derby show once a year.

I e-mailed WFAN last week with all the points I raised on this thread. As of today the station has yet to respond.

Like corporate radio cares about the common man. If one of their shareholders/advertisers sneezed and suggested what you did, they'd listen. Otherwise don't count on a response there buddy.

More from this past Saturday night (5/17), 7:20 PM update:

The Preakness got a bare mention at the end with no specifics on how Big Brown won. The Sybase Classic -- LPGA golf tournament in nearby New Jersey -- was omitted, though the first weekend of the WNBA was mentioned. Erica Herskowitz (sp?) did have room for a full-fledged baseball roundup and in so doing mispronounced two names.
