Has the old WBTS (Channel 8) moved?

I’m not picking up anything on that signal anymore. I know they’re scheduled to move to Providence, and I wonder if they’re now shut down.

The station ID on NBC10 now says “WBTS Nashua; WYCN Providence”.

It has been off since yesterday. They may have moved, or might be just in the process of it. The new transmitter location, at least initially, will be Norton, MA, with a signal on RF 36 heavily directional toward Providence. In my location, there is almost no chance of receiving it. If it is on, someone from the Providence area may post about.

If WYCN-8 has moved, I'm certainly NOT picking it up here, 5 mi. SE of Providence. 8.1 registers ZERO signal.

This entire Boston / Manchester repack has left me thoroughly annoyed. Not only do I get ZERO signal on WYCN, I am also getting ZERO signal on WUTF as well as signals plagued with a blizzard of pixels on the RF-5 stations and also the RF-29 stations.

OY!

Hello Channel 83:

I am about 9 miles north of you near the RI-MA line and like you getting zero signal from WYCN on RF36 and WGBH on RF5. I do get WUTF on RF19 and WNEU on RF29 but with a signal that is highly directional, somewhat weak, and occasionally has pixels.

Why the hell would this group move a station closer to Providence when they already have WJAR-TV (NBC) channel 10? I don't get it. What next? WVIT-TV (NBC) channel 30 of New Britain/Hartford would move to Enfield, CT to target Springfield and erode the numbers of WWLP-TV (NBC) channel 22?

I'm certain if WHDH-TV channel 7 had different owners at the time, they'd still be an NBC affiliate today.

You're right. When I first saw the announcement it was a surprize to me. But I cannot see the station, which is low power, ever taking the NBC affiliation from WJAR. I would suspect it would be like some of the stations owned by Howard Stirk Broadcasting and carry diginets like Antenna TV and Decades on its main channel and subchannels, but it's too early to tell.

They can continue to run Cozi on it, use it to fill in the Telemundo coverage area of WRIW-CD (sharing on WPXQ) and probably come up with a typical NBC surprise. The Norton MA location they are moving to is probably temporary.

Yes, WBTS-LD virtual 8 is completely gone here in Somerville. Their reception was sometimes intermittent with my indoor antenna here, so I wasn't sure.

My set is now saying "no signal". When it detects a faint signal that is too weak to decode at all digitally, the screen just stays black, but when it gets nothing at all it says "no signal".

Hi alg2468 Thanks for checking in.

Reception situation has changed a little since last I checked in:

The RF-29 stations now decode more often than not, but still suffer from occasional pixels and drop-outs. WUTF still checks in with "no signal", but I realize they're only at 50 Kilowatts for the time being. And the RF-5 stations now rarely decode and are never without pixels.

Actually, there has been ONE benefit since the repack. The move of WBPX to Hudson has now resulted in an Ion signal that is strong and reliable here, as opposed to our Rhode Island Ion station, WPXQ, which ever since the move to digital has NEVER had a reliable signal. Now, I never have to bother with WPXQ ever again!

WBPX moving to Hudson caused them to pixellate some here in Somerville. Repositioning my antenna may help, but I haven't felt like bothering.

I only got WPXQ once here during "troppo" conditions.

Moving the antenna should bring in WBPX OK. When in Needham they were on the somewhat shorter "FM128" tower, anyway.

WPXQ is near the southwest corner of RI and must be 75 miles from you. Here, south of the Needham towers, it is always present, but only locks in around 2 days a week during the summer, and rarely the rest of the year.
