Has the whiner line run its course?

I don't listen to WEEI as much as I used to. I was one of the people who liked the old format (with some exceptions i.e., LJ, Sterns, Smerlas, etc.), but since they changed I usually turn them off at 10 AM. I do, however, usually remember to turn it back on for the whiner line. At one time it was touted as the highest rated segment in Boston. Whether or not that was true, I always found it amusing even if it was stupid.

They have always had repeat callers but lately it seem like it's the same callers every day. It reminds me of the way the Mustard and Johnson show was the last time I listened to it. They have Joey the fake mafioso, Frank from Gloucester, a guy who plays the accordian, a weird woman who sounds demented and loves the Yankees, a slutty sounding woman who loves the Red Sox, the guy who says "Hello?, and a couple others. It's not so much that these people call frequently, that's to be expected, but they seem to be on every single day. They put Joey, Frank, and Angelo from Everett on, no matter how inane or unfunny their remark is. Is this a result of fewer calls or are they still complacent? You'd think that they wouldn't want to slip any more in the ratings.

Uh, it's not just the whiner line that's run its course, it's the whole 'EEI schtick.

You can bet some to the more entertaining (by their standards) callers are compensated for their appearances. Why else would Dakota from where ever may a fool of himself every time he calls in? He plays the role of a dumb foil for whatever host he talks to.

callers are compensated
Why? These are needy people. They'd do anything to get on.

Since I'm usually close to eating at that time I shut the radio off.

As for the repeat callers the talent pool isn't that deep. So if the station wants to feature this segment they probably have no choice.

Maybe kind of like a sitcom that pretty much jumped the shark but there are still devoted fans who sit in the audience and cheer and clap when the star of the show steps on stage. Look, Jimmie Walker! (CLAP)

And they wait rapt for him to deliver his...catchphrase.

"DY-NO-MITE!" (Cheers and applause)
So it is with the whiner line, though occasionally a funny line may pop through along with the expected
hello? hello? guy, Ciao! Frank From Gloucester, Cranky Yankee, HEY ORDWAAAAAAAAAAAY! YOU FAT
BAHH-STIDD! They're all there and they're sure to pop up at the Whiney Awards next year, too.

Fonzie strikes a pose, sticks up his thumb and says "Ayyyyyyyyyy!" And the audience goes wild!

"Anyone whines today ain't got no soul...And so it is we shall have the Latin, pluperfect tense if you
please--Nomar...No mas... No more" --Butch from the Cape, the Yankee fan who didn't live to
see the Sox win it all in '04 and '07. If you see him up in Yankee heaven, having a cold one with
the Mick, he will point out to you, "yeah they won a couple...but they're still way behind my
Yankees. Heh heh heh."

(He also managed to just miss seeing the Pats win their first Super Bowl, by about 3 months. Bob Lobel at the time: "He used to say he had Red Sox cancer, the type anyone can beat. Turned out he had
Yankee cancer--the type nobody could beat" (again we are talking 2001 here)

I agree. People like these and the likes of Danny from Quincy, Steve from Fall River, et al would probably pay WEEI to be on. They are nut cases who desperately need attention. If 'EEI is actually paying these people to call, they're in more serious trouble than everyone thinks.

Actually, a good strategy for WEEI would be to ban their so-called celebrity callers and hope they migrate to the Sports Hub. I think the daily onslaught of moronic callers played big part in their demise. They should have limited these people to once a week, the way Guy Manilla used to do it. I know at the beginning TSH didn't let them on, but I heard Joey from the N.E. on one of their shows a couple of weeks ago.. If they'll let him on, they'll let anyone on.
