Has the WYDE metamorphosis to talk finally occurred?

I've been listening to WYDE on and off during the day today, and they've been programming all talk from what I can tell. Most of the afternoon the signal hasn't been that great here in Shelby county, with a lot of stations coming in from the Laredo, TX area around 2-3 pm. The Dennis Miller show was on WYDE around 11 am this morning instead of the usual music fare, and the Lee Davis show has been on earlier than usual and expanded their time slot. Has the long-awaited format change finally taken place? Or will the music return again today or maybe even tomorrow? It's anybody's guess... :D

Man that brings back some memories (not the talk, the skip). I remember going to work along 459 a few years back and 101.1 was completely hammered by 1st adjacents from the Brownsville-Matamoros Mex area. I was almost late because I sat in the parking lot at work tuning around the radio.

I grabbed one the boom boxes inside and put it on one of the Mexican stations and all the Hispanic workers thought it was magic or something. :D

I do recall Burt and Kurt commenting on the interference during their show at one point - that may have been the highest ratings WYDE ever had!

I was up about 1:30 this morning, and WYDE was carrying Talk radio network programming. After the Id, they aired IRN/USA radio network programming. As Pass the Word mentioned on the long distance reception thread, The Lee Davis Show is now on four stations in the greater Bhm area... WXJC AM 850, 92.5; WYDE 1260, 101.1. I enjoy the show but it is a waste of power airing on four stations. WYDE easily covers 92.5's coverage area, and 850 likely covers 1260's area. if anything, they should just move it entirely to 101.1.

New to the area, what kind of music were they playing til now?

Depends on who you ask. Some say it was adult contemporary, some say gold-based AC, but to me, I'd say the format would be more properly classified as classic hits (mostly 60's through 80's hits). There wasn't any contemporary material being played on WYDE for the format to be classified as "adult contemporary", IMO. I know that (at one time) Crawford Broadcasting's website listed WYDE's format as hot AC. I don't know how they came up with that one... ???

Looks like Crawford has employed this "add some talk and see what happens" approach at another one of their stations. This time, they've added Ingraham, Mancow and Dave Ramsey to their 560 AM in Denver.

The whole Crawford and Mancow pairing just seems so… Odd.

"Odd" is a generous way of putting it. Let's compare two quotes, shall we?

"Preaching, teaching and talk from familiar voices, both local and nationally-known speakers. This is radio that changes lives with the Word of God."

"Mancow.com Noteworthy: Babes at Comic Con. Check out these photos from Comic Con... Simulate LSD with out using the drug! Watch this natural hallucinogen... Photo Spread. Playboy seeks Olive Garden girls for photo spread, check it out..."

As the song says, one of these things is not like the other. My hope is that the folks at Crawford Birmingham just didn't do their due diligence, and don't know who they have on their air.
