Has This Ever Been Done Before?

This weekend, KRBZ/Kansas City is doing a Daisy Chain Weekend. The title of each song connects to the next one by sharing a letter. It started at 3:00 Friday and goes through tonight. Here's a sample:

12:22pm CSTNirvana | On A Plain
12:28pm CSTU2 | Numb
12:32pm CSTThe Offspring | Bad Habit
12:36pm CSTDave Matthews Band | The Space Between
12:41pm CST Interpol | Narc
12:46pm CST RHCP | Californication
12:52pm CSTThe Bloodhound Gang | No Hard Feelings

I think WKLH in Milwaukee (classic rock) is still doing this on Monday afternoons. They call it "Barrel Of Monkeys". They rely on listeners to continue the chain.

It's a cute idea that makes a PD and MD think they're being trendsetting and whatnot, but most listeners are passive so they don't really care to think about song titles in depth when enjoying a radio station.

And that's to the extent that they know the song titles. It's possible that most passive listeners may well know a song by a chorus or lyrical hook and not necessarily by song title.

In which case, the exercise is fruitless. This is a case of a somewhat good idea being too cute for the room.

Sounds like someone trying to put a new twist on the old A to Z weekend... not to effectively, either.

How do you know it was not "to effectively" (or too effectively for that matter)? I heard a lot of callers playing along and making requests that fit the game. At least they are trying something different. Better than a computer generated, voice-tracked weekend playlist like most stations have these days.
