HAS WBZ DUMPED PAUL HARVEY?

Harvey was not on at his regular time today. I called WBZ and got several different replies ranging from changed hours to cancellation so the station could focus more on local news. If WBZ did dump Paul Harvey, they ought to be ashamed. The guy is an institution in broadcasting.

If not at BZ, might he wind up at WRKO? WTKK? elsewhere?

Maybe WBZ-1030 is getting rid or has gotten rid of their ABC Radio affiliation.

After all, WBZ is owned by CBS.

And to carry Paul Harvey, you must have some sort of afffiliation with ABC.

But for an all-news station (wqhich WBZ is from 5 A.M. to 8 P.M.), the more networks you have access to, the better the national/world portion of your on-air "product" is.

Since you missed Paul's spot, let me give you a recap

"Helllllllllllllllooooo Americans, I''''''''m Pauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllll Harrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvey. Today, sever-al coal miners are trapped. In a mine. And now ............. paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaage two!"

[Insert five minute commercial narrated by Paul]

Isn't Entercom buying ABC's O&O radio stations (except for Radio Disney and ESPN)? Isn't Entercom also buying ABC's radio networks (except for Radio Disney and ESPN)? If so, won't Paul Harvey wind up on WRKO by default? And if so, does that explain why Brian Whittemore appears to be trying to position WRKO's local programming more in sync with a NEWS/talk format, where news is more heavily emphasized than it was previously? The puzzle pieces seem to fit together--or I could be stealing Mr Gallant's thunder by adding two and two and getting 879, 693, or maybe... 680.

Earlier last year (2005), Paul Harvey was pulled from several stations that CC owns when CC began running Fox News instead of ABC news at the top of the hour. ABC Radio refused to allow any of the CC stations run Paul Harvey until or unless those stations also ran ABC News once an hour. Since that was not about to happen, away he went, along with the ABC affiliation which other stations were glad to accept. KFMB in San Diego is a good example. For years, (almost from the begining), they were CBS Radio. Now, they are ABC, and run Paul Havey, even though their TV sister station is also a CBS affiliate.

Sorry, I admit that I don't know the answer why Paul is not on WBZ. But, I imagine that since WBZ is now officially owned by "CBS Corp," and is under the official title "CBS Radio," ABC radio made the same decision to pull ol' Paul, and probably ABC radio as well.

Which begs a new question, what station in Boston will now have ABC Radio?
'RKO? WTKK? This could be intersting... Calling Scott Fybush!

I had brought that up earlier but was told by someone (I forget who)
that the Entercom deal would _not_ involve the ABC Radio Network (i.e.,
their syndie shows), but yes, could be...

I have an odd way of finding out..

I too am a fan and today was my first day "commuting" so I went to BZ for my usual AM does of Paul. Didn't hear it..had to come here.

A woman at my daughters bus stop today got out of her car and I heard him (paul that is) but it was about 825ish..and I thought "Its too early for him". I will have to ask her what station she had it on tomorrow.<P ID="signature">______________

Paul is out at WBZ

I reached someone at WBZ today. She said that Paul Harvey is definitely off of WBZ and that she knew of no reason why. She also said that "the phones have been ringing off the hook" with complaints. I'd love to know what genius at 'BZ thought this was a good move.

WBZ is keeping their ABC Radio News affiliation. They just didn't
want to pay for Harvey.

Probably lost a few dollars on the Bruins games this season
so needed to slash some programming, cheap bastards!

Just a note - some Clear Channel stations were able to keep Mr. Harvey after flipping their network news affiliation to FOX News Radio. WTAM/1100 Cleveland was one of them.

I don't know what cinched it, but I suspect ABC backed down on some things...not wanting to lose a 50,000 watt flamethrower like WTAM as a PH affiliate. The 'BZ situation sounds a bit different.

WRKO now has a link to ABC News. Not sure if that was always there, but that would indicated that the affiliation has shifted. It's interesting to note that WRKO is ALSO Fox News.

Re: From WRKO...

WRKO has been ABC News for awhile, and just post 9/11 they would have ABC
'casts about :01 past the hour (a minute or so) and also at the bottom of the
hour ("Here's the latest from ABC News") . Now they have Fox 'casts at the bottom of some hours (or local during most of the day at the bottom of hour)

Not sure btw if WTKK still has "NBC News Radio" as part of their TOH casts.

Could Paul Aurandt (Mr Harvey's real name IIRC) be headed to 680?
