Has WMUR Manchester Changed Their Transmitter?

Before and after the digital switch-over, I was able to get WMUR 9 most of the time at my family's cottage in East Wakefield, NH, near the intersection of Routes 153 and 110. Once in a while, especially on summer afternoons, WMUR's digital signal on DTV 9 wasn't there. But it was mostly a reliable channel for us.

So far, this summer, I haven't gotten a clear picture from WMUR once. Sometimes when I scan my DTV converter, it will stop at Channel 9 but the picture is unwatchable. Most times it doesn't even pick up a good enough signal to stop at 9. I wonder what happened since last fall?

What's odd is that in the evening, when I scan, I often can pick up WBZ, WHDH and WFXT Boston. Some good nights, other Boston stations will also come in. But WMUR, only about 50 miles away, is still missing. Boston is 100 miles away. One night I even got the CBS and Fox stations from Providence, 135 miles away. But no WMUR.

We get the three major stations from Portland, WCSH, WGME and ABC affiliate WMTW, around the clock, so we're not without an ABC affiliate. We also have no problem with WENH 11 in Dover. But it would be nice to catch some New Hampshire news from WMUR once in a while.

I'm sure WMUR wishes it had opted for a UHF digital channel rather than stay on 9, just as WMTW and WENH probably wish they had found UHF channels instead of staying on 8 and 11. But it's probably too late now to change. The FCC let WHDH move to a UHF position but they can't let all the stations that decided to stay on VHF now move to UHF, even though we now know UHF is better for distance for digital television, just as VHF had been better for analog television.

WMUR is only at 6kw power, so that may have something to do with the reception. Also WNAC and WPRI in Providence are on chs.12 and 13 respectively.
