Hatch To Program 'Sports 620' In Phoenix

RYAN HATCH is named PD at BONNEVILLE Sports/Talk KTAR-A/PHOENIX. HATCH comes from SIMMONS MEDIA's KZNS (THE ZONE)/SALT LAKE CITY.

BONNEVILLE is moving the existing News/Talk format to sister signal KTAR (92.3) and morphing the AM to "SPORTS 620," which will be the broadcast home of the ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS baseball team, the NBA's PHOENIX SUNS and NFL's ARIZONA CARDINALS.

And the Salt Lake City connection keeps crankin' 'em out! Russ Hill of News 92~three..where Hip Hop used to live; Jason Wilmot of KFWhyEye; and now Ryan Hatch of Sports Parking Lot 6~twenty. Hmmmm..Nurse Jeff and I are looking at some real estate in Tooele for a combination Media Hut and Gremlin proving ground.

Isw Phoenix faced with a 620/860 simulcast or did I miss what is planned for 860?

TMISU have been playing it close to the vest (or is that underwear?) on the future of 8~sixty. On the plus side, KMVP has the ESPN franchise; it's a convenient dumping ground for overflow play by play from Sports Parking Lot 6~twenty; and operating costs are minimal. On the negative side, a nighttime signal that has a few holes. Bottomline: Nurse Jeff and I think they'll keep it as the going price for stand alone AMs is about the same as a used Gremlin.

HERE'S THE REAL QUESTION: Which of the existing sports talkers will bail first? XTRA 9~ten or The Fan...formerly known as The Deuce? ???

My vote is for the D0uche...er, the Deuce to drop sports first. I hear Holmberg is already cannibalizing equipment from said sports talker.

Depends on whether TMISU want to move/upgrade the 860 transmitter site. Last I heard, they have 2 more years to move since the land has been sold to a developer.

XTRA won't be going anywhere until (a) Jim Rome calls it quits and (b) they start losing money.

I don't know why, but Gumpdusky won't put KDUS out of its misery. They're down to 2 local hosts and Sporting News Radio has been sold so the future of the network is in question. The only way they stay sports is if they can snag ESPN Radio from TMISU.

As far as I know, Bonneville is putting ESPN on 620 during non-local hours, so I can't see ESPN wanting to leave there for 1060. Especially with their sister ABC News being on 92.3.

Why wouldn't BI sell 860? After all, who can't use a couple extra million? If they do keep it, though, it would making a nice flank for KTAR as KFYI continues to bumble. There are plenty of top-10 talk shows not cleared in Phoenix that could be kept away from any future (FM?) talk competitors, and the vaunted Mercury and arena football games could continue to be aired there to bring in cash. Practice saying: "Would you like some $5 spots on 860 with your 92.3 order?" What else are you going to do with a crappy AM? LDS "Sunday Sounds" like their throwaway AM in SLC?

Or they could make it "KTAR On Demand" like WWL/NoLa. ??? Sometimes I'm just not around to hear Ted Simons recapping 'Dancing with the Stars'...

Why would CC dump a cheap and easy combo sale for KFYI and convenient dumping ground for their parent's FSR product (that no one else wants) in a top 20 market?

They will have two seperate owners soon and it won't matter. Unlikely ESPN would move off 620, but they have moved off two or three pretty decent sticks for horrible ones in search of 24/7 clearances. And although folks at Sandusky HQ #3 have spoken of a flip for close to two years now, that brokered crap-ola during the day puts a nice dent in what few bills they have.

KTAR-FM and KTAR will have two seperate owners? I'm not saying it won't happen, but why would they spend the money on marketing 620 with the KTAR call letters if that were the case?

Not a chance either 620 or 92.3 will be sold. The only station TMISU would even think of selling is KMVP, and even that depends on what they want to do with the 860 transmitter site. Bonneville won't be selling anything anytime soon.

The land was actually sold by the prior owner, then leased back. The owner of the land is the gravel and sand company next door that are running out of places to dig...cept where the towers are. The deadline date is the end of '08 last I heard and there are not a lot of places where you can move the array given the growth in that area (NIMBY) , while maintaining the 5 mile exclusion zone around sky harbor. One idea was to duplex off an existing array, but I think that 960 decided they didnt need the $$ that badly.

Puts the Bonnyville crowd in a situation , given all the $$$ that has been oured into facility upgrades at the xmtr.......maybe the Doc and Jeff need to call a code on 860 and declare them DOA.

KKNT 960 already has KFNN 1510 diplexed at their site.

Can one "triplex" three AM DAs?

OK, I got the story a little mixed up. In any case, they couldn't triplex with KKNT and KFNN since the major lobe on their towers is to the southwest (nighttime pattern). KMVP has to protect a station in Tijuana so they have to null in that direction. The only way 860 could go there is if they retuned to daytime-only operation or run nighttime power so low (100 watts or less, like KFNN) that they couldn't be heard outside of north and NW Phoenix.

The only station (as far as I can tell by checking RadioLocator.com anyway) that they could piggyback on is KPXQ 1360. They have a null to the SW so that would work. But that's another Salem outlet.
