hats off to the college stations

all this talk about these so-called 'big' announcements on zzo and cat make me realize how sickening commercial radio is. fortunately the lehigh valley and the Reading area have a decent number of decent college stations. whats your thoughts on some of these stations i've listened to in recent months. let me know if i'm missing any:

WLVR Lehigh University's Station http://www.wlvr.org/
sounds good to me. very professional sounding. nice website. lots of good specialty shows.

WMUH Muhlenberg's Station http://www.muhlenberg.edu/cultural/wmuh/
always a good sounding college station. very cultural sounding.

WXLV Lehigh Carbon Community College's Station http://www.wxlv.org/
used to be primarily metal. recently taken over by WDIY and cleaned house. primary format americana. very artistic cultural sounding sounds good in a coffee shop or a vegetarian cafe.

WRMC Moravian College Web Only Station http://home.moravian.edu/students/org/wrmc/index.htm
haven't listened much but looks like a wide variety. even polka?

WJRH Lafayette College Station http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~wjrh/
this station always looks kinda dead. not much on the schedule. and i've heard periods of dead air when driving through easton. very weak signal too.

KUR Kutztown University Radio Station looks like primarily web and part-15 AM and it looks like they're on local cable TV in that area too http://kur.kutztown.edu/
they do a lot of something called 'cafe kur' a really crazy jack-type format. i've heard everything from nat king cole to AC/DC.

WXAC Albright College Radio Station http://www.geocities.com/wxacfm/
last i checked, they did a spanish format during the day and specialty shows at night i think. sounded pretty good. pretty good signal throughout the Reading area.

so overall i think despite crappy commercial radio, our area has a lot of good college stations trying their best to do a good job. any thoughts on any of these stations?

I think WMUH does a terrific job! I believe all Community volunteers deserve a huge round of applause for keeping the station up and running all summmer and on every break. I know not everything is perfect there but they put out some great shows! By the way don't miss the Memorial Day 7 hr Light and Fluffy show with Chuck Morgan starting at 11pm Monday night and ending Tuesday morning at 6am when Rich O'Connor takes control! (If it's possible for Rich to be in control)

Also kudos to a guy like the Idol Rich on WMUH who plays great primal rock and Punk!

i wouldn't give kutztown u the time of day...even though it's my alma mater. no radio there and never will be 640 am carrier current through the college buildings. cable fm what a joke. if you want to go there for tv radio....hahahhahaha.... i was working radio in the valley and had an audio production class. the professor lady could not load a reel to reel player...i jumped up and did it for her and at the end of class was politely asked just to hand in my projects. mostly none of the current profs there worked in the industry. i guess in some cases those who can't teach.

a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

KUR is actually pulling out of it's rut it's been in quite nicely. They have completely redone the station in the past few years.

It may not be in the valley, but WESS is another alternative, it's very diversified, but that blasted BBC gets on my nerves after awhile sometimes...

Mr. Mayor in all due respect I think you've got it all wrong about kutztown. i know many people who graduated the telecommunications (i think its now called electronic media now) department there and they have some of the best professors in the biz. the one guy helped build three college radio stations in PA and NY. also, you're incorrect about cable FM. KUR "used" to be on cable FM. when i said they're on cable, i meant they simulcast their audio on the backdrop of one of those local public access channels. i think its channel 24. i was in a store in eastern berks the other week and heard this really crazy (i say that in a good way) mix of music, like an extreme jack format, i heard nat king cole then ac/dc along with very professional sounding liners that sounded like b-104. at first i thought it was a satellite service but then i saw the store owner had the tv on and it was that public access channel playing KUR.

forgot to comment on the WESS comment. yes, they are a very cool station too. i should have mentioned them although they're not really the Lehigh Valley. the only problem with 'ESS is that lately they've been relying way too much on BBC like you said. i guess when a DJ doesn't show up, just turn on the 'ol BBC satellite and listen to European news. lol they need more reliable dj's or an automated type music format like they run at kutztown's station that they can turn on when there's no jocks. BBC gets old after awhile.

How could I forget the return of Boss Time to WMUH! Welcome back John Blitzer!!!!

I agree on the bbc! How annoying sometimes! I believe it is a good service, but it needs to be suppressed from the daytime programming. They're running some 500 oldies program this memorial weekend or something, it sounds pretty good, I heard a few I haven't heard in quite in some time! I also agree they need to look into some sort of alternative automation...keep the BBC, but do MORE music during the day.

KUR is actually doing a really good job. Seeing first hand the college hire a full-time staff member who's entire job it is to manage the station, and seeing the station being run from outside the electronic media / telecommunications department they have really done an amazing job. The faculty is basically advisors and outside council to the radio station, and they are using new equipment purchased and installed in 2004. Since then they have transmitted on 88.3 FM / 1670 AM, and a few of the cable services as a backdrop for the university's tv station. Keep your eye on the station as it continues to grow, and I can say the budget that they get is nothing to sneeze at. So Mr. Mayor in the past I understand where you are coming from, I truely do. Currently you may want to actually take a listen to the station to find out what it's all about. I should know, I was the president of KUR a few years ago. I really appreciate the fact that there are others out there who listen as well.

I got to see their studios awhile back the operation seems solid and well oiled. They are going to sound great when they receive their license.........I can't wait to hear them then.

college stations like WESS almost are shameful because of how canned they sound! The bbc world service...whoop-de-do. i can get that on the internet anytime. its okay to have the programming but to be practically relaying it around the clock? uhhh...yeah.

MUH seems to also have some pretty good programming well split up and well rounded i enjoy that station as well

mr. izms. i was the production director when it was wksc. we had a goofball advisor that was a yes man and alot of station monies were misused. where has the full time manager worked???? sounds like another waste of our pa taxpaying dough. let them get a real xmitter like wlvr wmuh wxlv wdiy and we'll see if they can jump the high bar in kutztown. ps: what a beautiful campus. i was in the allentown kutzown areas on business and stopped at the univ last week and it is amazing the improvements. still a quaint little town.

mr. mayor, you answered your own question. from the stories i understand from close to the source, that "yes man" advisor as you called him was one of the reasons the station went nowhere when it was on 640 am. but it wasn't necessarily his fault either. he was a full time teacher without enough time to dedicate solely to the station. after going dark around 2000, people on the advisory board convinced the powers that be that the only way the station was going to go anywhere ever again would be to hire a pro. the guy they hired i understand has worked at several stations in allentown and reading. he must be doing something right. before criticizing the station, give them a listen. they stream online. this cafe kur jack type format they do during the day really sounds pro. they sound like they run a pretty professional automation system when no students are around complete with a bunch of liners from callers calling in saying they like the station. as i said before i have been in more than one local store with this station playing, and the college kids shows i've heard during regular semesters aren't half bad either. also, from what i've heard they're goin to be applying for an fcc license during the fall filing window. i expect big things from these guys in the next 10 yrs. the days of 640 am using radio shack broken equipment in the bottom of a dorm with an advisor who didnt care are done.

It's a shame what you experienced, believe me I understand. The man whom "they" hired worked at WEEU before this, and has been in the industry for over 10 years. The best part about KUR is the absence of the telecommunications/electronic media dept. The station was under those guys during your experience, and the same guys are still there. They didn't have the drive and passion about maintaining a station like those who really want it. Now the station is under student affairs, a sub-office of the Vice President, a change that happened with the new president of the campus. KUR has come a long way and now they are on the verge of being licensed. Believe me I can really appreciate the horrible, horrible experiences had in college radio. That is why we wanted to succeed, and I think we've done a good job of that so far.

think i know you as a former poster as i'll put it "r" if you are the guy...i expect big things...go for it and best wishes!!!! your posts in the past were very educted.

best wishes!

well i'm not sure if who you're thinking of is correct ... i havent been here that long to know former posters but the names of who are in charge are on their website http://kuradio.kutztown.edu and you can click on contacts. either way from what i've heard the station is in good hands.

I've had WESS East Stroudsburg on for several days, actually almost a week. They were playing GREAT oldies, some I haven't heard in YEARS! Suddenly, yesterday, they pulled the programming, and put the BBC on, and the audio quality is TERRIBLE on it. It sounded like they were having problems with a disclaim saying that they couldn't get a signal up (according to articles and so on) WHY would they put something terrible with audio you can hardly hear in one channel or stand to listen to on...knowing they won't get fixed 'till Tuesday (from an engineering/holiday weekend standpoint???)

The town was talking about them all week...you'd think a station would keep doing something that sounded good until they fixed whatever their issue was for good, instead of throwing something half-assed on the air the way it sounds. Chalk ESU up there with Nassau.
